When you post a long link on the IMDB forum, the software splits it up with a space, to stop it from pushing everything out of shape. However, when you edit a post it adds another space to the underlying link which breaks the link. As GS tends to have long links, this tends to break GS links when posted to the IMDB forums, as in this example:

Fixed this one, which was flagged up as broken and prompted me to start this thread:

Emperor, the way the IMDb message board software handles long links has been a continual irritation over the years. I understand that long strings of text without breaks causes formatting issue. I vaguely remembering suggesting when the new board software was in Beta test, that text strings wrapped in URL tags, should be truncated when rendered to a defined maximum (such as 40 character) and include ellipses ("...") at the end. However, the original text still remains untouched and can be edited without additional problems. Many bulletin boards use this formatting convention for links.

Indeed - that is the conventional way of doing it, however, IMDB don't have the [link=]text[/link] BB code, so I assume it has to try and process the available markup, which is where it goes wrong. They have made a move in that direction with the [link=] shortcut, but I suspect they might need either the full linking code or some fancy regular expressions. Neither of which should be difficult.

Perhaps we might see this in the next message board update, along with better post quoting:
