What about "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon"? I'm not a fan of show or even him, but a lot of people seemed surprised my that snub. I definitely prefer Colbert on him any day tbh!

Generally late night shows (Daily Show, the Jimmys, Colbert, etc. are considered "variety or talk series," not comedy. As there are no acting awards for variety series any noms for SNL appearances (or any similar, like Key and Peele, for example) fall under the comedy section. But all the other categories (writing, directing, etc.) fall under the variety/talk sections. If you look up the Daily Show you will see that they have won 32 Emmys and the awards have names like "writing for a variety series," variety talk series," picture editing for short-form segments and variety specials," etc.

I hate to mess with your really well written intro, but Jen's comments above made me think that some voters might think similarly so a little additional info might increase the clarity. :)
