problems with voiceover after most recent update

Hello,

I am using the App on my IPhone together with Apple's integrated screenreading Software Voiceover because I am blind. Sadly, since the most recent updates the screenreader is no longer working properly in some Areas:

When scrollling through the week's new Releases on the home page as well as the also playing section, all the speech Software announces is the Buttons to add items to the watchlist, not the items themselves. Sometimes the item is read out when I touch the right area on the Screen, but that is neither comfortable nor practical.

Also, I can no longer read the top-billed cast or the all cast sections - the Software simply skips over them and only reads out items when I accidentally touch the right place where the item is located on the Screen.

I haven't found any additional Problems yet, but it seems the update is not working well with Voiceover. The user experience for visually handicapped People is rather limited at this Point.

I have made great experiences in the past with IMDB's Support Team and therefore ask if something could be done about These issues.

Hi Beate, I'm an engineer on the IMDb iOS app team. Can you help me reproduce the problem?

For the New Releases and Also Playing, I'm assuming you are talking about the Showtimes & Tickets section on the homepage. I turned on Voiceover and used the flick right gesture to navigate across items on the page. When I get to that section of the page this is what Voiceover reads to me:

Showtimes & Tickets, button, heading
New this week
Add to watchlist, button
Tully, black star 6.9, image
Add to watchlist, button
Overboard, black star 3.4, image
Add to watchlist, button
Bad Samaritan, black star 6.0, image
Add to watchlist, button
RBG, black star 7.7, image

It does read the movie titles for me, although it also reads each add to watchlist button between each movie. I agree that's not ideal. Are you not experiencing the same behavior on your phone, or is this the same but not to your expectations?

Next, I tried using the flick right gesture to navigate a movie page. When I get to the cast section it reads out the items fine for me:

Cast, button, heading
Top billed cast
Charlize Theron, Marlo, image
Mackenzie Davis, Tully, image
Mark Duplass, Craig, image

Is this not what Voiceover reads for you? Let me know what app version and iOS version you are using so I can try to duplicate what you are experiencing. I just used the version 8.9.1 app on an iPhone 7 running iOS 11.3 to test this.

Hi Mark,

what you describe is exactly how Voiceover should behave and usually does (that the “add to watchlist” buttons appear between each movie title is perfectly fine). When I perform the flick right gesture, Voiceover simply skips the items and reads out the buttons. For the cast sections, only the headings are read out to me.

I am using app version 8.9.1 on an IPhone 7 with IOs 11.3.1. The only difference I can think of is that I downloaded my update from the German App Store. I just tried deleting and re-installing the app and encountered the exact same situation.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.

Beate

Hi Beate,

The app is identical in each app store, but different language and location settings in the app can affect how it works. I tried setting it to Germany with German language, but I'm still able to use Voiceover on those sections without a problem.

We'll need to figure out how I can reproduce this issue before it will be possible to fix it. I also tried on an iPhone 7+ we have, and it works fine there, too.

Is it possible for you take a screen capture video and post it here or email it to iphone@imdb.com so I can get a better sense of the problem? To enable this, go to the Settings app and under Control Center, choose Customize Controls, then move the Screen Recording option to the "Include" section. That adds a new button to the Control Center.

To open Control Center with a gesture, tap the top of the screen to move the VoiceOver focus to the status bar. Then swipe up with three fingers from the bottom of the screen. There will be a screen recording button in there to start and stop a screen recording to capture the problem in a video.

I was able to reproduce this behavior by going into Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver and changing Navigate Images to Never. That causes Voiceover to skip over the poster images. In our next app release, we will be changing these poster images throughout the app to have the accessibility trait of "button" instead of "image" so that when this setting is on it will not skip over these elements.

I NEVER would have thought of that. Now that I set up Voiceover like that, it works perfectly fine. So sorry for causing a fuss about something that I could have fixed easily by myself - ant that was my own fault. Thank you for your thorough Investigation. This is a five-star Rating on the appstore you guys are well deserving of.
