May I suggest an alternate means to authenticate an account in addition to text messages?
Symantics (Norton Antivirus and Utilities) allows people to authenticate their account with an audio pin number they receive via an automated phone call. One of the ID theft services to which I subscribe also provides this kind of authentication.
Pros: This would allow users who do not have cell phones or text messaging service on their cell phone to authenticate their account.
Cons: This would allow people who chronically abuse IMDb's Terms and Conditions to more easily re-authenticate disabled accounts and authenticate sock puppet accounts.
