Oscar nominated Best Picture films are better known for their artist achievements, rather than their financial achievements. Some movies buck the trend and are well known for being successful by both measures. These movies are the highest grossing inflation adjusted box office movies to ever secure an Oscar Best Picture nomination.

Which movie* is the best combined commercial and critical success?
* minimum $0.5 billion inflation adjusted USA Box Office (Feb 2017) and a Oscar Best Picture nominee

Hi. Did you get Dan's note about the first two films having the same numbers? If that's a typo (I'm assuming it is, although I know it's close between those two), could you fix it so this could go live? Thank you!

Thanks, for the heads-up. I made the correction and checked the other facts and figures. I also tweaked the introduction, title and question a bit. Plus, re-ordered the list based on the question rather than by descending box office. I think it has made the poll better and more interesting for poll takers. FYI, there are two listed movies have the same box office numbers($519m), but it is not a mistake.

UPDATE: Blockbuster Oscar Nominated Best Picture Movies
Generally, movies nominated for the Best Picture Oscar are better known for their artistic accomplishments rather than for their financial achievements. However, some films buck this trend by being successful by both measures. These movies are the highest grossing inflation adjusted box office films to ever secure an Oscar Best Picture nomination. My vote would go to either The Godfather (1972) or The Graduate (1967).

I honestly don't understand why this is the result of this poll... And I have to make the argument that using inflation adjusted box office data is one of the worst methods of measuring a film's success to that of other films

What do you suggest as an alternative measure of commercial success that would be fairer?

In the absence of a better way, I find it the best way to compare movies within a specific year and across years. Because,  it accounts for ticket inflation, It would be best the best way to rank movies by the total tickets sold for each film.

These would be presumably the Top 30 Oscar-Nominated Best Picture Blockbusters. An alternative way to view the list would be, in terms of total tickets sold. (ie All-Time Biggest Blockbusters)

I went with Star Wars IV, and not because it's my favourite here (Raiders of the Lost Ark is), but because of how monumental the story is.

I agree, the question phrasing allows for dual interpretations and New Hope is a great story.
