World Peace Day is observed annually on 21 September. The United Nations-sanctioned holiday, officially known as the International Day of Peace, is dedicated to promoting world peace. (Poll idea inspired by rubyfruit76)

Which modern peace activist do you admire the most for their leadership in the use of nonviolence as a means to achieve political and social change?

See the partial list of peace activist who espouse nonviolence to achieve political and social change here: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls049914598/

Does the United Nations organization conflate nonviolence with peace? I would not do so.

I get your point, but what is the alternative to quietly sit by and doing nothing. By allowing those in power under the status quo to promote violent harm and social injustice. "Nonviolent resistance (NVR or nonviolent action) is the practice of achieving goals such as social change through symbolic protests, civil disobedience, economic or political noncooperation, satyagraha, or other methods, while being nonviolent. This type of action highlights the desires of an individual or group that feels that something needs to change to improve the current condition of the resisting person or group." Given all the options, this seems the most peaceful of all and far better than doing nothing to solve the world's problems.

I would guess that the purpose of the day to have a discussion about peace and steps that can be taken to move us closer to that ideal.. Here is the website if you want to know more, International Day of Peace. The 2019 Peace Day #peaceday theme draws attention to the importance of combating climate change as a way to protect and promote peace throughout the world.#ClimateAction Learn more HERE

In order to face to to the theme, I am making that association, as does Google and Wikipedia when searching for famous peace activists. Likewise, the New York Post made the association as i did:,To honor the International Day of Peace, a list of the most famous peace activists.

The list is kind of too male centric (especially given the examples ... ((cough cough)) womanizers....

FYC:
Toni Morrison, RIP.
Yoko Ono

Nobel Peace Prize winning women.
Malala Yousafzai

Bertha von Suttner (1843–1914),
first woman to ever have won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Leymah Gbowee. I just added the related image file to the Daily Show episode in which she was interviewed (if this is an image list related poll suggestion). Give it a day for approval and posting (no doubt it will be).

Jane Addams (there isn't an image of her IMDb... though I'm scrounging around to see if the 1914 animated short documentary with her featured ... ((WTH?!)) is online).

Hi Urb,

I'm sorry that I didn't notice that you changed the intro for August. I had it noted for September. Let me know if you have a preference.

Mandela didn't exclusively advocate nonviolence.
