May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month in the U.S.A..

Marvel first's superhero movie featuring an Asian protagonist is currently being fast-tracked by the studio. The movie focuses on martial arts hero, Shang-Chi, with a script by Chinese-American screenwriter Dave Callaham (The Expendables, Wonder Woman 1984) and helmed by Japanese-American director Destin Daniel Cretton.(Short Term 12, The Glass Castle).

According to Polygon, "Marvel allegedly wants to create a film with as much impact for the Asian and Asian-American communities as Black Panther (2018) garnered with the African and African-American communities, a film crafted by Asian and Asian-American filmmakers that explores themes specific to the Asian and Asian-American experiences."

Which of these Asian movie, television or streaming characters* is your favorite superhero? * East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, Pacific Islander, American Indian or Eurasian/Biracial Asian

See the partial list of Asian movie, television or streaming superhero characters here: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls041541077/

Thanks, for the information, although it seems to be a different character. It seems to be an homage rather than being derivative. An homage is something that shows respect or attests to the worth or influence of another.

According to Wikipedia, Black Mask,  the protagonist of a 1996 Hong Kong film: Tsui Chik (or Simon in the US version) tries to lead a quiet life as a librarian. However, he is really a former test subject for a highly secretive supersoldier project and the instructor of a special commando unit dubbed "701". The 701 squad is used for many government missions, but after one of the agents kills a team of policemen in an uncontrollable rage, the government decides to abort the project and eliminate all the subjects. Tsui Chik helped the surviving 701 agents flee the extermination attempt. Having escaped, Tsui Chik went separate ways from his team and lived in Hong Kong. Later at night he discovers that the rest of the team were responsible for a violent crime spree that was beyond the capability of the local police. He sets out to get rid of them, donning a mask and hat using the superhero alias of The Black Mask. Having lost the ability to feel pain due to the surgery performed on the super-soldiers by the military, Black Mask is almost invulnerable."

"In homage to The Green Hornet, Black Mask wears a domino mask and chauffeur's cap in the same style as Kato from the series."

P.S.
In the movie, they even poke fun at the similarity between the two when the Black Mask is compared to Kato in the news reporter scene.

Good poll; just two suggested edits...

1.)  "Which of these Asian American movie, television or streaming characters*  is your favorite superhero?"

* East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, Pacific Islander, American Indian or Eurasian/Biracial Asian

2.)Why are Native Americans listed? There is some small genetic links but that's true of most, if not all, races and ethnicities. This is what is stated on the website for the Heritage Month

May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).

Cinephile, I'd wait a little while longer before I'd declare Urb M.I.A.
His last reply was leap day. Feb 29. Lately he has been taking log gaps between activity. I think it had to do with the request to stop the excessive bumping a while back. He was one of the ones that did it a lot.

Fine, but I don't believe that he is really active.

I'm only being realistic. He is less active than he used to be, and usually, this indicates possible inactivity in a not so distant future.

While most are Asian-American, some are from a Asian home country only or another split like Asian Canadian, Simu Liu. A purebred Native American is not native to the Americas, likely either crossing over on foot from the Bering strait land bridge or by boat across the South Pacific. https://www.thevintagenews.com/2019/0...

I changed the term to Indigenous Americans, to cover Natives outside the USA, like First Nation members of Canada or South American indigenous peoples. It is thought genenitically, ...."these groups are traced back to four female ancestors: Ai, Ina, Chie, and Sachi. .... The DNA group’s closest relatives outside the Americas are in Southeast Asia"

Yes, that's true that there are some genetic similarities, of course, just like there are with all human beings. Human beings all first lived in the continent of Africa but doesn't mean that all human beings are considered to be African diaspora. The "four female ancestors" assertion sounds ridiculously unscientific, akin to "Adam and Eve" and, indeed, the website can not be verified to be reliable but let's say that is correct: it still, as you quote, means "The DNA group's closest relatives outside the Americas are in Southeast Asia," which, in no way, equates to what you're saying when you include Indigenous Americans as Asian / Pacific Americans.

You cite Asian Pacific American Heritage Month so you should use their definition, which again, is:

All Native Americans Descended from One Ancestral Population

https://www.the-scientist.com/daily-n...

They are immigrants just like any other group looking for a better life and choosing to leave the land were they were born.

“USR1 really provides the most definitive evidence for all Native American populations in North and South America deriving from a single population,” says University of Florida geneticist Connie Mulligan, who did not participate in the study. “In other words, there was only one wave of migration over to the New World to settle both continents until much more recent times. It’s the final data in support of a single migration.”

How many major races are there in the world?
"The world population can be divided into 4 major races, namely white/Caucasian, Mongoloid/Asian, Negroid/Black, and Australoid. This is based on a racial classification made by Carleton S. Coon in 1962. There is no universally accepted classification for “race”, however, and its use has been under fire over the last few decades."

What we refer to as "race" of a human being is close to what would otherwise be referred to as "phenotype" and "genotype", or "breed", for other species. Although, that is a weak "we" to which I refer, since the United States government uses socially-constructed nonsense designations on all of its forms and paperwork relating to "identity" of the applicant or subject.

Not all the characters or movies in the list are American. Do you think they need to be?

Native Americans being included seems surprising. I guess this comcerns #28 Mirage, aka Danielle "Dani" Moonstar.

Another reason not to include Mirage at this point is that the movie The New Mutants is not released yet.

Same with Shang-Chi.

I removed both. But, the question isn't about the depiction, it is about the superhero character. You don't have had seen Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie (due out next year ) to be fan of the character from the comics or from other multimedia source.

There was an Asian character in the Super Friends, Samurai, But I couldn't find a solo image of him, he is here alongside Black Vulcan https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076994/mediaviewer/rm286665728

It looks extremely low budget, but upcoming Ghost Cat may also fit the poll

Thanks, I considered Samurai but had the same issue locating a solo image on IMDb or online a year ago. Also, main depictions were four decades ago and were limited to several appearances on https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samur... and https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chall...

If you are citing Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, the characters should be Asian American or Pacific American and the title should say "Asian American," not Asian.

I altered the introduction to "Asian/Pacific Heritage Month celebrates cultural and historic contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander descendents. It is celebrated in the month of May each year in some parts of the world. One aspect of Asian cultural heritage is media portrayals. "

It makes sense to take the Canadian celebration into account as well.

With regard to which minorities are included, the Canadian website says, "Over the last two centuries, immigrants have journeyed to Canada from East Asia, Southern Asia, Western and Southeast Asia ..."

So they are not counting indigenous Americans or others who may have migrated thousands of years ago.

Maybe you don't have to include a specific definition of the word Asian at all.

Among the major divisions of the human race, the group that indigenous Americans belongs too isn't really debatable at all. I could see the argument for indigenous Americans as a distinct subgroup, but leaving them off the list would be like excluding another subgroup altogether. As a race the hold an equal standing with these other subgroups: northern Mongolian, Chinese and Indo-Chinese, Japanese and Korean, Tibetan, Malayan, Polynesian, Maori, Micronesian, Eskimo, American Indian

Most anthropologists recognize 3 or 4 basic races of man in existence today. These races can be further subdivided into as many as 30 subgroups.

Ethnographic division into races from Meyers Konversationslexikon of 1885-90 is listing:

  • Caucasian races (Aryans, Hamites, Semites)
  • Mongolian races (northern Mongolian, Chinese and Indo-Chinese, Japanese and Korean, Tibetan, Malayan, Polynesian, Maori, Micronesian, Eskimo, American Indian),
  • Negroid races (African, Hottentots, Melanesians/Papua, “Negrito”, Australian Aborigine, Dravidians, Sinhalese)
I don't recall much issue with the Poll: Favorite Black Multimedia Superhero Character? or whether anyone cared which continent they came from or their nationality.

The information you provide is terribly out of date, and there is no consensus among anthropologists or evolutionary biologists about this to date anyway.

I'm inclined to exclude Native Americans / First Nations, despite them belonging to the Mongoloid group, but include East Indians, despite them being of mixed Caucasoid (Semitic, Persian) & Negroid (Dravidian) heritage.

This is more in keeping with the groups that are considered "Asian an Pacific Islander" in the North American context in the 21st century.

Edit: I see rubyfruit has explained this in much greater detail than I have above.
I strongly suggest you go with her guidelines.
