George A. Romero (1940–2017) was a horror pioneer, iconic film-making legend and the father of the modern zombie horror sub-genre. He leaves his mark as a writer, director, producer and editor, in each of the past six decades, with his groundbreaking work in the horror genre. Romero's films satirize bigotry, racial prejudice, consumerism and make bold social-political statements. Today's hit TV series and movie franchises, like The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, Shaun of the Dead and Resident Evil, all owe a debt to Romero's work that both influenced filmmakers and popularized the genre.

The original Night of the Living Dead. 'Nice memorial poll with a good intro.

I think the 1968 classic will probably grab the majority of votes, maybe it would be wise to admit this is the obvious winner and ask the question with "apart from the classic-that-started-it-all..."

I agree it is a top contender, but I am not sure it wins with IMDb's younger demographic. It is fourth in votes and second in rating and obviously his breakthrough film. Also, It might be his best known work too, but I think there are couple titles that could make that claim. I think its low production value combined with the fact that it is fifty years old might hold it back.
I will give your suggestion some thought, as your point makes sense. But, I think removing it might be ill-advised and there might be a better solution. In the meantime, I flipped the #1 spot Night of the Living Dead (1968) with the #5 spot Dawn of the Dead (1978) to level the playing field a bit. I have no idea how this will shake out, but think all the titles in the top seven could contend.
1. Dawn of the Dead (1978) 7/10
2. Tales from the Darkside (1983 TV Series) 7.7/10
3. Day of the Dead (1985) 7.2/10
4. Creepshow (1982) 6/10
5. Night of the Living Dead (1968) 7/10
6. The Crazies (2010) 7/10
7. Dawn of the Dead (2004) 7/10

Thanks El, I appreciate the suggestion, I made me re-think the poll. I think removing Night of the Living Dead
from the top spot made a difference and swung a percentage of the vote.

Romero's films satirize bigotry and consumerism, and make bold social-political statements.
No need to say list both bigotry and racial prejudice separately. One or the other will do it.
urbanemovies
bigotry: obstinate or intolerant devotion to one's own opinions and prejudices : the state of mind of a bigot overcoming his own bigotry
racial prejudice: an irrational attitude of hostility directed against a race or their supposed characteristics
racial prejudice is specific to a race, whereas bigotry is more general an could be applied to sexism, classism, nationalism, ethnic hatred, the uneducated, people who wear suits and so on.
