Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan on a July 17, 1938 trip from New York to California lost his bearings due to cloud cover and mistakenly flew east instead of west. The next day, he landed unexpectedly in Ireland after a supposedly unplanned transatlantic flight. In honor of "Wrong Way" Corrigan Day and other surprising turns and shocking outcomes:

Which movie that took a likewise surprising turn of events and ended with an unexpected conclusion is your favorite?

See the partial list  of movies with surprising turns and unexpected conclusions here: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls068487449/

I think that some movies, like American History X, Citizen Kane and Now you see me, don't have that kind of surprising twist like the other movies (Fight Club, Sixth Sense).

I can see your point and agree 100%. I think there are arguments for their inclusion or omission on both sides. I found choosing difficult as there are too many worthy option to list them all.

Citizen Kane, as an example, is a better movie and the "Rosebud" reveal is quite shocking the first time you watch the movie. Other movies I listed were not as good movies overall, but excelled overwhelmingly in the plot twist and ending to warrant inclusion. The list is comprised of balanced options that fit the scope and score well on a variety of factors: shock value, writing, plot twist,  IMDb votes, IMDb rating, reputation, etc..

If you look purely at one factor, I think some omissions or inclusions stand out, I am open to any suggestions. I did give The Machinist some consideration and it was on the cusp of inclusion. Honestly, I had a hard time remembering all the details, I only saw it once when it came out and I watch a lot of movies. But, I do remember being shocked and impressed by the movie and the performance. I agree it probably is as good as or better than the bottom third of the listees. I added it to the answer options.

The Departed. When Colin Sullivan opens the door and there is Dignam standing there, dressed to leave no trace evidence behind, and Dignam shoots Sullivan. It is a complete surprise and rates as one of the best "What the f*** just happened?" moments in movie history.
For that reason, I still maintain that The Sting belongs on this list. Also to use a deliberate play on words and a reference to your Poll Suggestion: They Got Away with Murder!, both Henry Gondorff and Johnny Hooker got away with murder and a killing without actually killing someone. (Well not exactly, there was hitman hired to kill Hooker that needed to be taken care of first.)

Sorry, I messed up. Right now I'm thinking of trivia game or maybe a poll with trivia questions in it as selections or just a strait poll of "What Movie Were They Watching In The Movies?" It is about movies where a character is watching another real movie or it is on a movie marque (no movies posters for a very good reason) when something dramatic happens. It started when I got a copy of Earthquake (1974) when Rita (Victoria Principal) is sitting in a theater watching ***** (sorry no answers given out now) when the big quake starts. Me talking to Urbanemovies about Max Van Syndow is not helping me to keep my mind off this subject so I can do other more important daily living things because ******* was used in Last Action Hero when the magic ticket allows Death to walk off the screen.
I got "The Blob", "Love Actually", "E.T.", "Field Of Dreams", "Cinima Paradiso", "Its A Wonderful Life", "Back To The Future", "Wall-E", "The Omega Man", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", "Gremlins", and "Sabotour" all lined up for questions about what real movies they used in the movie. I never saw "Hugo" or any of the "Scream" movies and I know they used real movies too.
