For games that allow you to create and name your own character, like all the Legend of Zelda games (I had never used the name Link), and Buldar’s Gate, YOUR OWN CHARACTERS THAT YOU CREATED YOURSELF!!!!!
IMHO, for all it is worth, which is nothing, my characters Castel, Jasonary, and Wintergreen The Last Elf are pretty damn good.

I just thought, it would be good to seperate between old greatest video heros and new generation greatest video heroes. I think so, because there is a change in generations. I see the heros you put in and only know about Gordon Freeman, Lara Croft and Ezio Auditore da Firenze - the last one just because my son is a gamer too, as I was earlier. But with job and family I lost to game sometime. I guess there are many guys like me out there. So why not make 2 poll sugestions of it? I would suggest:

'Greatest Video Game Heroes Before 2000 a.d.' and

'Greatest Video Game Heroes After the Year 1999 a.d.'

That would really rock! :D There are so many old video game heroes that would get great attention (for the older Generation) and of coure the video game market is on the boom for about 20 years. So there is enough suggestion-potential for sure. But puttin' them all in one poll is a little unfair to the older video game heroes as well as for the new ones. ;)
Greetings. :)

P.S.:
Pacman and QBert are two of  the most iconic video game heroes.
And Guybrush Threepwood is an icon, too. Thank you for putting him on the list.

I honestly wouldn't think they would publish two polls on this subject. Besides if I made a pre 2000 poll the Nintendo characters would win out. They might still win out in the current list but it would be closer.

If this goes live I will start to put together another list of pre 2000 characters.  My current list has some pre 2000 characters but all have seen sequels past 2000.

A nice selection already, but what about Doomguy

I was hesitant since he is a silent protagonist that doesn't interact with the story too much but he is too iconic to leave off. I might add Jack from Bioshock also since I added Doomguy.

He is a bit of devoid of personality to be more immersive to a player... But he also has a kind of iconic emotional face, as well, to balance that.

And the 'Loom' guy? Loom was an adventure-game that was spread widely in the 90's.

Here is a twist on your topic. How about characters from the first CGI Animated Saturday morning cartoon show for kids, Reboot (1994, ran two years on abc and was slaughtered everything in it’s time slot, including Disney channel shows, then Disney bought ABC and kicked Reboot off/ it was picked by Sfyifu channel for a while and ran on various other channels off and on until 2092).
If you are not familiar with the show. It is set in the city of mainframe which is a computer city on a hard drive inside your personal computer.
It was B.O.B. Job to be the system’s defender against viruses and bugs, and mend the damage. “To mend and defend” is his motto. Well a part of the recurring gags of the show (and was used to openly parody popular games and movies of the time) was that from time to time, the user would download games onto the system’s hard drive. The games would drop down onto the hard drive and Mainframe as huge game cubes (get where Nintendo could have gotten that name for it’s later released system from?). Well, if the user won the game, a part of the city was erased or “nullified” when the game ended and the game cube disappeared. If the user lost, nothing would happened to the city. B.O.B., his girlfriend Dot Matrix, her kid brother Enzo, and later game spite (who escaped from a game by copying her code onto Enzo badge) AndrAIa would enter into the games, Reboot as a game character to battle to defeat the user and save a part of mainframe from being destroyed. Yeah, B.O.B. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108903/... , Dot Matrix https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108903/... , young Enzo Matrix https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108903/..., older Enzo who now calls himself “Matrix” only https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108903/... , young AndrAIa https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108903/... , older AndrAIa https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108903/... were all video game heroes saving the system from us, the users.
From the IMDb Reboot page:
As an added complication, games being played by the mystical User invade the system regularly, and must be defeated, or else portions of the city are laid waste... This gives us a chance to see every genre of video-game ever conceived, from the point of view of the characters!

I think I will keep TV and Video game characters separate for this list.

The stories premise does sound familiar. Is it similar to Code Lyoko (2003)

That is because they are both children of the same source that introduced the concept of showing the video game from the video character’s POV, a city inside a computer, computer programs personified as humans, people sucked into a computer, and a computer virus trying to take over the world. That film is “Tron” and maybe “Electric Dreams” too. Tron has a lot of children that uses a combination of one or more of it’s concepts. Wait. No. Tron was first.
