Actually, that's a pretty good question. These are actors who didn't have a range of roles as wide as Day-Lewis or the method actors of the 70's, but within their so-called limited range, they're always excellent. Eastwood would be my pick for the consistency.

Indeed. And I've often wondered how actors like Beatty, Redford, Eastwood, and Costner would do if they had been offered wider roles: they could be incredibly versatile but I think their conventional good looks may have gotten them pigeon-holed a bit. Beatty has shown some impressive range, as have the others to a slightly lesser extent, when given a chance but these four, while offered many great roles, just may not have ever got a chance to show their full potential in terms of range -- or at least not yet. (They're still alive and kicking.) Woody Allen is a different case but he's Woody Allen: he's brilliant enough in various things.
