You point out that Sam Mendis already has an Oscar nomination. That alone should preclude him from the list, regardless of the category. Same thing as Tarantino. I believe that's how this was handled in previous years' versions of this poll. Well... as well as the other previously mentioned Oscar nominees as well.

Sam Mendes clearly falls within the scope of the question. Which of these Oscar-nominated rookies, first-time journeyman nominees or first-time nominees in a new category are you the most excited about?

The scope and question are the same as last years version and the pool matches the question in both year's version. Oscars 2019 — Most Exciting Rookie Nomination?*  Which of these Oscar novices from 2019 nominations are you the most excited for them to inject new blood or to receive long overdue recognition in a particular Oscar category?

This year's answer pool has more options overall, as well as, more emphasis on filmmakers getting their first producing nomination or long-time industry crew getting their first nominations of any kind. I am fine letting poll takers decide, especially as it is abundantly clear that it is the first time in a specific category.

The intent of the poll suggestion is to do double duty. I think long overdue recognition for someone like, Robert De Niro, whose three decades as a producer and co-founder of Tribeca Productions deserves some cheers for his first producing nomination. Likewise, last year the first directing and producing Oscar-nominations for Spike Lee and his production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks were equally deserving of accolades and recognition for being overdue.

Regarding #9, there is also a Korean documentary short nominee. Either it's a shared first, or you can remove the words "in any category".

Must you asterisk the word "excited"? It seems like an overcomplication of a simple question.

South Korea
Two Films

Best International Feature Film, Gisaengchung (2019) aka '기생충' (original title) Best Documentary Short Subject, In the Absence (2018) aka '부재의 기억' (original title)

These two productions are the first South Korean films to receive Oscar nominations. They garnered eight South Korean nationals their first Oscar nominations in any category and a first South Korea country nomination.

Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Karen O were previous Oscar nominees in the Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song categories for USA-produced film work, both Korean-Americans were born in South Korean.

I removed the segment of the question that focused on Oscar veterans who secured a first-time nomination in a new category. The number of poll options was approaching fifty and thought it was better and fairer to split out that segment into its own poll suggestion.

Which of these select first-time rookie nominees or first-time journeyman nominees are you the most excited about their 2020 Oscar nomination?
