Changed "sub-genre" to "genre or sub-genre" in the title and the description.
A late change, sorry.

Thank you, but now I'm really unsure about Callahan or McClane.
Give Bruce a chance, hm? Movie god Clint Eastwood still ownes his parade role of Blondie, isn't it?
(p.s.: The Cowboy)

Nah.... Bruce can't beat Eastwood as a cop.
Eastwood WAS a cowboy
John Wayne IS a Cowboy!!! If you did not have a restriction on ratings, I'd pick Rooster Cogburn from True Grit!

Thank you for that, but many people that live modern lives even don't know him. But as he is a western Icon, I will specify them both better for more diversity.

I make amens. Since both of them are real cowboys, I have put John Wayne next to Clint Eastwood. This will be a duel within the poll. Let's see whom the audience (voters) like to see as the one and only cowboy. But Ed, I make this amen, because they're both iconic western characters! I would like to see more diversity in the overall selection of different sub-genres. So please more different genres!

No, sorry! You cant convince me. There are 2 main character based movies. 'Die Hard' (1988) and 'Dirty Harry'. (On the biggest and most acclaimed movie site) 'Die Hard' with Bruce Willis reaches a 8.2/10 from about ~730.000 users, while 'Dirty Harry' reaches a 7.7/10 from about ~130.000 users. The quotes clearly speak for McClane! What is that "Ranker"? It doesn't seem reliable to me, compared to IMDb!

You are rating the movie. Not the character.
Your asking in your poll to rate the character, NOT the movie.
If there is to be only one "character' per profession, then character based polls are important. In a Ranker poll you have those up and down arrows.
Harry has 257 thumbs up but only 88 thumbs down. Net 169 votes
McClaine has 12 more thumbs up at 269 but significantly more thumbs down at 113. Net 156.
Harry Callahan edges out John by 13 votes.
Martin Riggs isn't in the picture with a net 107 votes.
Bruce Willis is not a bad choice.
But ask yourself this question.
Who would win in a Face-Off Poll?
This is a regular poll.
Bruce IS nowhere near the top!

According to the list from IMDb you present in the link above, John Wick would be the one and only cop, because he is on top of the list. But it's a list about hand gun using characters, not specificly policeman. I don't trust Ranker. I can't see what the poll was about on that Ranker site. Both movies, 'Die Hard' and 'Dirty Harry' are about specific policeman's work. Callahan as well as McClane are the theme heroes of these cop movies. Callahan is iconic, yes, but ...

Frank Abignale was no con man, he did alone.
As I remembered right, it was a Stephen Spielberg movie.

No not kidding. Look at the list above of the most recognizable actors by decade.
Jennifer Lawrence is the 2010s most. Robin hood would not hold a candle in voters minds. The last RH movie is 30 years ago

Ok, so I've put Jennifer Lawrence to the list as "dystopian female archer...". "dystopian female" would have been terminated by suggestions about Sarah Connor. The same with "female heroine" (also by Ellen Ripley). So I picked the sub-sub-category "dystopian female archer".

Lastly FYC to help in the poll description.
Use it if you like.
The Definitive Character by an Actor
by Breumaster | created - 1 week ago | updated - 17 minutes ago | Public
Some actors define a role like no other. When you think of a scream queens/kings, there is no one you think of except Jamie Lee Curtis. She is the definitive "Queen of Scream" in horror movies. So this poll has the very best actors that are definitive in other character roles in their own right.
What actor do you feel is the best at owning the specific listed roles below?

Frank Abignale is sure no con man. You won't tell me that Robin Hood isn't the leading icon of archers since decades. He is the epitome of an Archer. Even new generations pick up that legend. But they don't do as good as the last time when Costner did it.

The Archer from The Lord of the Rings is the tops # 1. My Suggestion of Lawrence is most recent, but comes in at # 5. Robin Hood was # 3.

Top #1 of Ranker? Sorry, no! I surely rely on the many other movie fellows from the audience who rated on IMDb. Legolas was a supporting character. The fanbase of LOTR is big, I know. I think the cinema franchise was so big because of the surely excellent work of Peter Jackson and many workers who were fans theirselves. The fact of having a staff of highly motivated fans working for the movie, enabled the huge success. Even people who haven't known anything about LOTR were hyped. And that's ok, it's fandom. The marketing machine of Warner did it's best to get people into the movie. And that's ok, too.
But the main character icon of Robin Hood is not only a hyping sensation. There are movies for over many decades in different styles, which are loved for the one and only archer Robin Hood. Even modern youth is tied to the legend by several movies that were released the last ten years. But I really think Costner did the best modern Robin of the hood. It was one of the most realistic Robin Hoods and still had a little magic of the old ones. It wasn't such sober like the one of Ridley Scott. And it wasn't so overdrawn like the one of Otto Bathurst. For me Costner is the Sean Connery of the woods. ;)

Another IMDb poll that proves my point about con men.
My leaning is Newman. But I'm old.(64) Younger people will go for DiCaprio.
So either one would likely garner the same vote count.....Maybe.
If it was my poll I'd pick the safe bet. And that would be ?????? I would be torn between both. It would be hard to leave either out.

I wouldn't define Abagnale as a con man. In the movie he was acting as a single criminal. But when I look at that screenshot, it seems to be the official definition. I put DiCaprio on the list as a con man. But first I gotta work a little. ;) Even though I would rather define Robert deNiro or Al Pacino or Joe Pesci as the one and only con man.

Breumaster,
Frank Abagnale considers himself a former con artist. Forging checks and impersonating people is generally considered in the domain of a con artist.
