Users rate movies on IMDb based on how the movie is overall, but we don't know if the movie has any one stellar aspect.

How about we not only have the overall rating, but even ratings on different aspects, like screenplay, acting, visual effects, art direction and others? That way people not only know how good a movie is, but what its best or worst aspects are.

I think this is a bit outside the scope of our current rating scheme. It's an interesting idea, but it's unlikely to be implemented in the short term, though we'll keep it in mind if/when we work on future improvements to the voting system.
