There are two listings for the title "Herbert West: Reanimator/Re-animator", with different release years and different cast members/director/writer listed for each. Which listing reflects reality??

No offense, but that's nonsense, on account of assumptions and possibly fallacious reasoning as well. What if one of them is a sequel, and the other is simply a foreign remake of the original? How can you be sure?
neither of them have the same plot as the original so how would they be remakes of the original?
Neither of them may have anything to do with the original, in that case.
They clearly do, Herbert West is the guy's name in the original movie & they both involve bringing the dead back to life

Good point, but those are biopics, ACT_1. To convey the point more pertinently, we would look at how often something like Frankenstein (funny I should mention it) has been adapted.

groovyvic, "Herbert West – Reanimator", original short story by H.P. Lovecraft is actually in public domain so it can be adapted by anyone with no restrictions, unless it trespasses too much into imitating a well-known and copyrighted adaptation from 1985 and its sequels.
Both of the movies you brought up are actually NOT sequels to 1985-started franchise and are instead their own movies based on the short story which just happen to be made in the same timeframe and will probably further confuse everyone for years to come.

In 1985 (If I remember correctly) 4 different productions of Carmen were released, including a triple one by Peter Brooks, so we had 6 different movies on the same topic in one year alone....
