Removal of roman numerals and title years from submission system suggestions

Name and Title suggestions within the data submission system has been changed for the worse.

At some point in the past couple of days, I noted a couple of changes that make data submission to the IMDb more difficult.  Roman numerals have been removed from name suggestions, and years have been removed from title suggestions.

Examples:

You want to add a movie connection to the Disney classic Bambi.  You remember that it was released in the 1940's.  Now without the year next to the title, you have no idea which one it is unless you waste time clicking on them to see what page comes up.

Lets say you want to add Danny Smith to a cast list.  You remember him from Kuu Kuu Harajuku, and also recall that he is/was Danny Smith (I).  Now try to pick him out of the list:

These two changes (maybe there are more?) have made it much more difficult to add data to the IMDb.  Please re-consider and find a way to make it easier, not harder.  Thank you.

I too see the same issue. I know that mine is the top choice. But you're right, The roman numerals have disappeared.

I just noticed this too.  It is making updates very confusing and I don't see any benefit to it.  It needs to be reverted to the way it had been previously.

While I don't like the change to the display, the do seem to have fixed the search. It used to be if you search for something like "Casablanca", the 1942 (which is the most famous one and the one almost anyone would search for) would be the 18th or 20th selection. Now, it's the first. Losing the Roman numerals hasn't been a big issue for me because it still lists the top cast.

When choosing the correct person to add to a cast list, during the update phase, Roman numerals are needed. I accept that we don't need to see them in cast lists for titles once the data has been submitted.

Adrian's reference to "top cast" is fine as long as the person he is searching for is a "top" cast member - ie that he is searching for the famous John Smith and not a lesser-known John Smith who has only worked on a few titles.

I was talking about top casts when selecting a movie connection. I never really found the roman numerals helpful for people and would frequently have to click through them to try and find the right person. For people, the thing I miss the most (and it's been gone for years now) is that they used to list akas. If you entered something like "John Creighton Smith", you would see in the list "John Smith" aka "John Creighton Smith". Now you have to click through to see alternate names.

Adrian, even with roman numerals I often found myself re-checking just in case...

Hi Ron,

Thanks for posting this.

I'm not sure what's changed here so I've cut a ticket with our tech team.

I'll update once we have an answer.

Cheers,

Joel

Hi Ron,

This was an unintended side-effect of improvements to make search results more relevant (as Adrian spotted).

Given this, we've reverted the change and are working on a fix that retains the roman numerals and title years.

Cheers,

Rachel

Hi,

Just to follow up here.  We have re-implemented the search improvements with the roman numerals and title years showing now.

If you have feedback on the search results, please let us know.

Cheers,

Rachel
