At the moment you can tag a list when you create it:
http://www.imdb.com/lists/tag
However, there are two problems:
* If you forget to tag a list, then there is no way to add it later (I must have done this on half my lists).
* The tags are just weird - 3 Harry Potter tags? The bulk of the ones that aren't genres are under-populated.
The solution seems to be to extend keywords to lists and replace the tagging. People could then add keywords to their lists (perhaps allow the option of other users to add keywords with the list creator getting to approve them, rather than staff). You could then offer the option to view the lists when someone does a keyword search.

IMDB still resembles a Frankenstein's monster, with all sorts of odd parts crudely stitched on. Some of the changes proposed on here would make it a more integrated whole (with better usability) - this would help draw things together and changes like adding the list filter menu to the sidebar of the search pages would be a big boost too.
