Hi everyone,

I am a data scientist and currently doing my PHD at a university. For my PHD I am (among other things) working on how data changes in public data repositories such as IMDB. For this purpose I have uncovered data from the old IMDB data dumps (semi-structured text format: and used the diff-files to extract how the data in IMDB changed from 2014 to 2017. Since extracting that data was quite a bit of work, I would like to provide the resulting, modified data-set to the research community. Thus, I would like to publish this modified data-set, ideally under an open source license. Is it possible to get the permission from IMDB to do this?

I think the best way to go about an open source license is to simply do what's best and go with your gut instinct on what data should and shoeld not be allowed to be posted and/or amended.  Use your knowledge learned through your education to determine what the best outcome would be if you were to implement this purpose of data reconfiguration.

I am merely a person off the street and would recommend to take this information with a grain of salt.

Hi Charles Oh,

The advice you offer would violate IMDb's Terms and Conditions, and their intellectual property.

I recommend that you check with your university's library and find a professional librarian familiar with intellectual property.
