Restore reasons for item deletion to receipts

This idea is a follow-up to the question I posted at

When one submits a data update to remove an item, the reason for the deletion is not included in the receipt that the contributor gets by e-mail. (Nor, for that matter, is it included in the full summary that appears on screen at the time of submission.)

Col Needham explained this, saying, "This change is for improved email security and privacy since the explanatory text itself is intended for internal communication purposes between the contributor and the IMDb staff only and therefore not intended for publication on IMDb."

However, I think that the security and privacy benefits that this change is supposed to provide will be outweighed by the potential inconveniences that it will provide.

If someone requests deletion of an item, and it doesn't get deleted, the reason for deletion that they provided likely was inaccurate, unclear, inadequate, or otherwise not good enough to justify deletion.

So if the person comes to this message board asking for help with getting the item deleted, the contributors here are likely to tell the person something like "Please post your last full data submission here on this message board. You can copy it out of the receipt you would have received from IMDb by e-mail immediately after sending it in. ..."

Now, however, we would have to tell the person, "Also, besides that e-mailed receipt, please go to your contribution history and copy the reason from there ...."

This is discouraging me from giving advice, for example, to the person at If I asked him to provide his e-mailed receipt to see what reason he gave for asking for deletion of certain credits, that receipt won't include the reason anymore.

There's no longer a single piece of text that we can ask the person to copy and paste over here to help us diagnose the problem. And when people occasionally try to copy text directly from their Contribution History, they typically wind up copying the form and leaving out all the actual content of their submission.

Meanwhile, I don't understand privacy or security issue with sending a copy of the information that a contributor sent to IMDb back to that contributor. Is this some kind of unusual interpretation of the new European data privacy regulations?

So I am requesting that explanations be restored to the e-mailed data receipts, and I have posted this as an idea to encourage other people to support it.

I'm happy you posted this idea Gromit!
I also hope they return the reason in the "full summary" of a submission. I asked about this in the other thread, but for some reason, IMDb shut that thread down (

Unfortunately this is a privacy regulation issue and it is therefore not within our power to change the system, sorry.

I was afraid of that. Anyway, thanks for explaining.
