Roseanne Revival

I'm just curious but I noticed today that the revival of Roseanne is listed as a separate series despite having the same characters as the previous incarnation of Roseanne. Why wasn't this just add as a new season of the previous Roseanne (like what was done with X-Files?)

Hi Adrian -

When determining on whether a continuation of a series is listed as part of the original series or as a separate series, this is dependent upon how the series is advertised by the network.  Even though the new series may have the same returning cast members, if the show is being advertised as a new stand-alone series, we will list it as such on the site.  Some examples of this are: "Fuller House" and "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life".

Actually, Michelle, this just deepens my confusion. I do not watch this show, but I have seen more than a few commercials for it. I do not believe ABC is advertising this as a new standalone show but as a continuation of the previous show (well despite the fact that John Goodman's character died at the end of the last show). If they are advertising as being separate, I could just be unaware of it. I've seen other sites refer to this as Season 10 of the show. It seems to me that it is more along the X-Files (which is shown as a continuous series despite the gaps of years) than Fuller House or Gilmore Girls.

Thanks for following-up, upon further review, you are correct in your original assessment that this new listing should be moved to the original series.  We initially listed this title as a new series based on several trade announcements from 2017 that referenced the new series as a reboot separate from the original series (for example (SPOILER): http://deadline.com/2017/04/roseanne-revival-roseanne-barr-john-goodman-sara-gilbert-1202078883/ and http://deadline.com/2017/05/roseanne-revival-officially-midseason-go-abc-becky-twist-dan-alive-12020...), however, the network is now advertising this as a new season of the original series (http://abc.go.com/shows/roseanne).

I have filed a ticket for our editors to review the listing and move the data, as soon as I have an update on the status I will let you know here.

I don't know about this title, but the title formats guide has this language, for reference:

"On occasion some titles warrant a second series listing though this is subjective and each case has to be judged on its own merits i.e Arrested Development (one), 24 and 24: Live Another Day (two) etc. Here are some of the criteria to consider when trying to define whether a series should be listed as one or two titles: the length of time that has passed between the seasons, significant changes to the credits including production details, how the series is marketed when released and perceived by the public and if there were any changes to the primary title."
