are reviews screened to weed out reviewers with connections to the film being reviewed (e.g., employees of production company, friends/relatives of cast, etc.)? Obviously these reviews might be biased in favor of the film.

I think all reviewers should check a box certifying that they are an independent reviewer, etc. before their reviews are actually posted

It is often pretty obvious when you read them. The problem doesn't necessarily come from friends and family of the creators, but people buying reviews and they are never going to tick a box saying that they are biased.

The main fix for this is to vote down reviews that you don't agree with (this might just be because taste is subjective or it might be biased reviewers) and these will start to look distinctly shabby over time with low helpful votes.

It is annoying, and I have been suckered into buying DVDs based on some obviously biased reviews on IMDB and Amazon, but you live and learn - vote them down so no one else will fall afoul of this.

True. I like to throw out the best and worst and go by the middle of the road, less emotionally connected, comments. But sometimes there are not enough to do it that way and you kind of have to hope and wish they were being honest and sincere!
