separate camera and electrical.

I use IMDB to find camera crews on jobs.  Is there any way to separate camera and electrical?  Sometimes there are so many names to go through just to find the first and second assistant camera.  It would be so helpful.  Thanks

I believe there are plans to split this section into separate Camera and Electrical in the future. However, they are still working on transferring all sections to a new update/display system and are not likely to do any work on new splits until all current sections are on the new system and running well.

It is likely to be quite a long time before any work will be done on this split.

Since I last checked in four years ago, things have gotten more difficult to find. Between, grips, electrical and camera, sometimes I have to go through 150 names just to find who did a specific position. Can we separate camera, grip and electrical please?

grip and electric make sense together as there is often crossover but PLEASE the camera crew needs their own heading.

Camera department is an entirely different set of skills than electric or grip. It is a disservice to the entire industry that the foremost page for credits in said industry doesn’t acknowledge the difference.

Just saw this thread.  Yes.  Now that IMDB is the de facto resume for so many crew members, I use it all the time to reference their credits.  There are so many set lighting technicians on every show that it is actually hard to pick out the camera people.  Please separate the two departments into TWO SEPARATE CATEGORIES.  Thanks.

It’s agreed, the Camera Dept should have its own section. Let’s make it happen!

IMDB - Please add my vote to separate Camera Department credits from our dear brothers and sisters in Grip and Electric. There can be so many names on big shows with multiple units that all get lost together.

It’s actually “uneducated” to have Electrics and Camera together, but Grips by themselves. It makes more sense if you Must combine a group to have Grips and Electricians together and Camera separate.

Please separate by like departments. Camera and Electric aren’t even a close match.

This should be a given and have been done a long time ago but please separate the camera department. It makes no sense to have us bunched together and makes it extremely difficult when searching to hire.

I can understand the overall point of this thread (and I don’t really have a problem in either way), but I don’t fully understand why the current system makes it ”extremely difficult when searching to hire”? I mean the occupation is usually listed, whether it’s ”camera operator”, ”1st assistant camera”, ”lighting technician”, ”gaffer”, ”grip”, ”electrician” etc.

I’m sure people hiring camera/electrician crews know the difference between the different occupations? IMDb is not really there to provide resume/CV for companies (although you can of course use the site for that in many cases), IMDbPro is more suitable for that. IMDb lists film credits, being a historical database.

Hi Eboy- Here is an example. Say one is wondering who the camera operator is on Avengers:Infinity War. I type in the movie and have a huge list of names alphabatized by last name. Now I have to scroll down the list of names and read what each person has done and hope I haven’t missed anyone to find out the camera operators.

As a database, this is flawed from a usability standpoint. It is easy to type someone’s name and find out what movies they have worked on. If someone is typing the name of the movie to start their search, they probably aren’t looking to see if a particular person has worked on it, they would just search by their name. There should be an option to alphabetize by occupation perhaps? Then it would make it so much more efficient to see who were all the people who did a certain job on any given movie.

A separate issue is that the camera department is usually much smaller than the electrical and grip department, so trying to find who was in the camera department among a huge list of grips and electrics is like trying to find a needle in a haystack, something else that separating out the camera department from the grips and electrics will fix.

Cheers,
Dan

Dan, thanks for reply. Fair enough, for the films like ”Avengers” it can be difficult to find all the same occupations/positions (if you’re not looking the actual names).

If someone is searching by show name, in my opinion they are most likely looking for who did what position on the show, and alphabetizing by occupation would make more sense. If one knows the name one is looking for, they would search by their name, not the show name...
