In attempting to update the song-writing details for "Li'l Red Riding Hood" by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, I have come across a problem.

There are 14 entries for “Lil’ Red Riding Hood”, of which the songwriters credited are

  • Ronald Blackwell – 9 credits
  • Ron Blackwell – 2 credits
  • None – 3 credits

There are 4 entries for “Lil’ Red Riding Hood”, of which the songwriters credited are

  • Ronald Blackwell – 1 credit
  • Ron Blackwell – 1 credit
  • Ronald Blackwood – 1 credit
  • None – 1 credit

There are 4 entries for “Little Red Riding Hood”, of which the songwriters credited are

  • Ron Blackwell – 2 credits
  • None – 2 credits

Ignoring the entries where there is no songwriter credited and the entry for Ronald Blackwood, this leaves two possibilities as the songwriter’s name.

It could possibly be two forms of the same name (Ron/ Ronald), in which case a simple merge of the names would eliminate any duplication. The preferred name would be ‘Ronald Blackwell’. A scan of major music discography websites provide the following data:

  • DISCOGS – uses ‘Ronald Blackwell’ as the heading for the artist’s entry, but uses both ‘Ron Blackwell’ and ‘Ronald Blackwell’ as forms of the songwriter’s name.
  • ALLMUSIC – uses ‘Ronald Blackwell’ consistently
  • 45CAT - uses ‘Ronald Blackwell’ or ‘Blackwell’
  • SECONDHAND SONGS - uses ‘Ronald Blackwell’

while WIKIPEDIA uses 'Ron Blackwell' (qv).

However, 'Ronald Blackwell' has 1 credit as an actor and 'Ron Blackwell' has 4.  These credits all occur in the period 2010-2016. (The song was released in 1966.)

So, there could be one person who is both a songwriter and an actor, or there could be two people – a songwriter and an actor, or there could be three people - two actors and a songwriter.

I would like to simplify these entries, but my research (limited to the web and my small library of music books) has not assisted me in differentiating or consolidating these individuals. I have not been able to find any biographical data for the songwriter or the actor.

What should I do? Leave as is?

Or do you have access to other information which could assist?

(My gut reaction would be to consolidate all the songwriting credits under ‘Ronald Blackwell’ and all the acting ones under 'Ron Blackwell'.)

Hello,

While doing a search on the songwriter, I found a notable item that should also be considered.

Apparently, the songwriter died in a car wreck in the mid-1960s. (Billboard Magazine, October 1, 1966, pg. 52. Photo of Sam the Sham presenting a gold record to Mrs. Ronald Blackwell, the songwriter's widow. Google search link.)

So I would suggest the following.

1. On both Ron Blackwell and Ronald Blackwell pages, submit a name split for both name pages. So any acting credits should be on a different name page.

2. After those name splits have been processed, which may take at least 72 hours or more, I would submit a name merge for the Ron Blackwell name page and let the Ronald Blackwell page be the primary name page for the songwriter.

Why Ronald and not Ron?
1. The Billboard article.
2. ASCAP (A search on the performance rights organization's website lists his name as Ronald Blackwell.)

I'm unable to find any other news articles on the songwriter so I have no idea when he passed away.

I hope this clarifies your inquiry. Please write back if you have any more questions.

Thank you.  As I said, I had not been able to locate any biographical information, so yours is gold.

I'll think about it for a little while, but will most likely do as you suggest.
