Short film, mini series or both?

Hi.

I have an interesting question. I was in the middle of adding a 3-part mini-series to IMDb, when a found out a few new facts (confirmed info) about it. In short:

- The first ”episode” was originally already released in the 1980s and back then it probably wasn’t a series at all (that idea may have come later), it was more like a short film. The ”episode” was originally released without the real on-screen title or credits (again, these came later), as it was part of the longer program aimed to children (it was one program among the many).

- This first ”episode” was then re-released in a few years later, again without any on-screen title nor credits (again, it was shown part of the longer children’s magazine program). The host probably introduced the program, though - and used some title (probably very close to the one that became the series title).

- Then around three-four years later from that, two additional episodes were made and the ”first episode” was properly re-released as a part of the series (first episode). This time it had an on-screen title (as did all three episodes) and the end credits (as did all three episodes).

Now: Can I still add this as an (mini) series to IMDb, considering that the first ”episode” was originally released ”individually” some years before the actual (mini) series? If yes, the release date should probably be the original release date of that ”individual” release (and not the release date of the series’ first episode)? This would be the easiest way to add the title. There’s also a problem with the credits (since the ”first episode” didn’t originally have any - only later).

Or is the first ”episode” considered as an ”short film”, that was just re-released as a part of the three-part (mini) series later (and therefore can’t be added as a part of the mini-series)?

It’s good to remember that I don’t fully know what the original plan was. Maybe the plan was to release two more episodes later on. Or maybe not. Anything is possible in the world of children’s programs.

Thanks.

Hi Eboy -

Just to clarify, you mentioned that the episode was first released as part of a program, can you provide some additional information about this program (such as the program title, does it have an IMDb page, etc.)?

It was originally shown as a part of the children’s magazine program that includes different children’s series and animations (with the host/hosts between the different programs). This is a very common thing at least in Europe (especially before the digital age of Netflix and such).

Basically, it’s like some children’s magazine show would include Donald Duck short, then Garfield episode, then Looney Tunes short, then Paw Patrol episode, etc (these are just made up examples). All the shorts and episodes are added individually to IMDb.

Basically, the main question is that should I add the first ”film/episode” as a part of the mini-series (since it was some years later re-released as a part of the three-part mini-series), or should I add it as an ”individual film”? I have to admit that this is a bit complicated release, since originally it didn’t include any titles or credits (I have to double check, though). Titles and credits were added when the mini-series was released. And I’m not fully sure what the original plan was (was it going to be a mini-series all along, it just took some years?).

In a nutshell: The *first* episode of the three-part mini-series (released in 1989, with titles and credits) was originally released in 1983 (individually as a part of the children’s magazine program, and without any title or credits).

(This is not a thread bump, but additional info.)

I got some info from the original director of this project (I usually consult him when I can, even when I have the basic info from the end credits etc).

The director informed that the idea was to make more episodes after the first one, but it just took some time before they did ”two more”. So in the light of this info, it could be wise to add the project as a mini series.

Hi Eboy,

I would agree, as long as you add a trivia item explaining the history of the project I think this makes the most sense. The other alternative would be to list the first title as a standalone, then add a shell episode linking to it on the mini-series, but I think the first option is better for other IMDb users.

I hope this helps.

Will
