Should a plot keyword for the fictional country of Val Verde exist?

There are some works set in Val Verde, a purely fictional country located somewhere in the continent of South America: for example, the movie Commando (1985) and the video game Broforce (2014). I've tried (more than once) to tag at least one title with the to-be-created plot keyword "val-verde" but none of them have ever gone live. Why not?

Otherwise if the idea has merit, could the IMDb staff please approve the following submissions?

If it's used in several titles, I'd say yes. A fictional location in a single movie, probably not. I'm surprised your submission was rejected.

Hi Jeorj -

The keyword submissions were not accepted because "val-verde" doesn't qualify as a keyword, as per our guidelines.  A keyword is a word (or group of connected words) attached to a title (movie / TV series / TV episode) to describe any notable object, concept, style or action that takes place during a title.  Therefore, a fictional place such as "val-verde", or "The Shire", would not be eligible keywords.

For additional information on Keywords you can review our submission guide here.  Cheers!

Cities, countries etc. where movies take place are routinely included as keywords because they are notable aspects of the plot. This one is only special because it is fictional.

How is a setting not a notable object?

Hi Jeorj -

Keep in mind that the main purpose of keywords is to allow users to easily search and discover titles, since a fictional setting isn't exactly a notable object, concept, style or action taking place during a title, this type of keyword wouldn't really be beneficial to discovery on the site.  As noted above, you can find more information abut our listing guidelines here.

A keyword would be a way to easily discover titles set in a particular fictional location.

The guidelines don't say anything about this issue, but of course, stating a policy here at the board in response to a query is also acceptable.

You are incorrect about it not being beneficial, Michelle. If somebody wants a list of titles that take place in Val Verde, then what is he or she supposed to do? Use Wikipedia?
