Should FX's A Christmas Carol be considered a TV Movie instead of a TV mini-series

Currently, A Christmas Carol is listed as a TV mini series listed with 3 episodes; however, all airings on FX were as an all inclusive 3 hour show. Also, FX and Hulu show it as a single entity.

Adrian: This is potentially a tough call, since the show is a BBC/FX co-production, and it airs in the U.S. in one night but over three nights in the U.K.

However, from what I can find, the U.S. airdate was December 19, while the U.K. airdates are from December 22 through 24. So that means that the first showing was as a single TV movie, in which case it should probably be classified as such rather than as a mini-series.

In other words, as far as I can tell, you're right and the show should be considered a TV movie.

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for getting in touch.

This is an interesting case, as you've mentioned it looks as though this was shown in a single showing as a first release - however everything points to this being a series:

For example the URL states: https://www.hulu.com/series/a-christmas-carol-2019-47003839-f88e-4ea9-94a5-7cc247bf9c73

The Hulu page also states:

"TVMA • Drama, Holiday • TV Series • 2019"

Reviews also seem to refer to this as a series:

https://hollywoodgossip.co.in/a-christmas-carol-review-2019-tv-show-series-season-cast-crew-online.html

Do you know if this was shown in 3 separate installments across the 1 night?

Cheers,

Joel

It was not shown as three separate episodes. Each hour has a title but there are no opening credits and no credits between the three chapters. It flows as a single, 3+ hour program (including commercials). The end credits aren't grouped by chapters/hours but are one continuous credits.

That Hulu link shows it as a series but it only has 1, 172 minute episode, which would seem to imply it isn't really a series.

Only the first part matters, was it shown in a single showing as a first release? The other things you mentioned (the word 'series' in a URL, what reviewers say about this title) are completely irrelevant for the matter at hand here.

I just noticed that if you look at the link to A Christmas Carol on the FX site, they refer to it as an "FX Original Movie".

Can we get this fixed? The cast for episode 1 shows the complete cast for the entire movie.

Can we get this fixed? This is ridiculous that this is nearly a month old and nothing has been done.

Is there a reason that there has been no response on this in 2 months and it is still listed as a TV Mini Series, which it is not?

3 months on and still no official answer why this hasn't been converted to a TV movie? I tried to change it myself, the contribution, of course, was declined.

Since we are starting to see regular support again, I thought I would bump this yet again to see if we can get this 5 month old problem solved.

Hey all - I've looked into this and I agree with Joel's position earlier that this is a mini series based on the fact that the show was commissioned by the BBC as such:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2019/christmas-carol

Yes it was shown back-to-back in the US on FX but I think there is value in preserving the multi-episode format for any people who worked on one episode and not another, as individual parts had their own credits on the BBC so we can confirm if this happened.

On the subject of cast - as you know we don't submit corrections to data that contributors can submit. So please submit the corrections for episode one to remove the cast that are not credited there. Feel free to link this thread as your explaining comment and let me know if it's not accepted.

It should not matter how it was commissioned or even that it aired on BBC One as a mini-series. It should matter how it was first shown, which is as a movie. The US release on FX was December 19, 2019. The BBC 1 airing first occurred on December 22, 2019. Thus, it's format should be based on how it was originally shown in the US.
