I am not part of IMDb, just a user like you, but here is my understanding:

The list of IMDb birthdays is not a list of celebrities, but of people in the IMDb database (someone who had never appeared in a movie or TV show would not appear, even if they were famous).

Ted Bundy does have 19 film credits in the database (for appearing in Archive Footage).

I assume the list is "compiled" algorythmically, without human intervention, although I don't know that. Presumably, people may have been looking up Ted Bundy (due to the birthday), which might raise his "Starmeter", making him more likely to appear in the list.

It doesn't suggest that IMDb thinks he is someone who should be celebrated...just that he appears in the database and people have shown interest in him (the latter is my guess). You obviously know who he is, and may have seen a documentary about him...that documentary may have contributed to him appearing in the list.

Hope that helps!

So, but why should he be taking up space on a list of celebrity birthdays over, above, and beyond talented people who worked diligently at their craft to become noted actors, singers, and dancers?

How is he taking up space? Aren't actors, singers, and dancers also listed? Like it or not, he is (in)famous.

Maybe IMDb does not have a way to measure "talent" and "diligence" of work in a craft.

Definition of celebrity: a famous or celebrated person

The fact that no one has asked you "Who is Ted Bundy" should tell you something about whether he is famous or not.

Why should he be celebrated? Maybe he should appear on the despicable murderers list, but why should he be paraded alongside celebrated actors, writers, and producers?

Right. IMDb did not make the entertainment industry. It just lives in it like everybody else.

So why change it for the better? Is that the point. Each day, IMDb designates a list of 50 actors, directors, writers, and produces to it's list of birthdays. If you include a despicable serial killer there, you're precluding someone who, even if they appeared in a documentary, should not maintain greater status to appear there. You live in specific place. Would you choose to live in a gutter? IMDb has the power to determine what it disseminates, just like Twitter and Facebook.

Right. Yesterday they had Pablo Escobar on there list of celebrity birthdays. I’m looking forward to the celebration of people like Joseph Mengele, John Hinkley, and maybe even Hitler himself. Again, such choices preempt artists, and are simply deplorable. If they keep it up, I for one will can the app and never look at The site again. The argument that these birthday choices come up as result of some mindless algorithm is not a particularly strong justification.

Where on IMDb do you see any celebrations? I just see a daily update on the home page stating which five celebrities were born that day. I have never seen a person like Ted Bundy or Hitler make it to the five names on the home page, but if you click on "see all birthdays", you will see, well, all birthdays. So yes, then you can come across serial killers, dictators and whatnot, exactly as you should when using a database.

Hi, Marco. You've effectively shed light on what could technically be a misunderstanding. On the other hand, the creator of this thread has a point. He may not know it but pornography actors (perhaps crew as well) are omitted from search results by default. Maybe the same could be done for people or figures whose filmographies consist entirely of archive footage, implying that they made zero contributions to cinema, whether artistic or technical, whether high-quality or low-quality. Unfortunately such a criterion would give the boot to a lot of people who are indeed artists, engineers, discoverers, innovators, archivists or managers who've made contributions to the humanities without even so much as harming a mosquito. Right now, there is no specific data field to flag the name pages of persons known exclusively for treason, murderous behaviors, extrajudicial governance or waging war without provocation.

I like the suggestion to eliminate people from the list known just for archival footage. Those individuals didn't consciously try to be be in movies or TV, and in some cases, may even have been deceased before it happened. That way, IMDb isn't making a judgement call about which crimes or specific behaviors would exclude someone.
