Should the digital (internet) release date ever be the official release date?

With more and more direct-to-video titles debuting as digital releases ahead of their release on Blu-ray and/or DVD, should we start counting the digital release as the official release date? If we don't then are we behind the times and in denial?

Good and tough question! But it sures deserve a throrough review.
I am lacking experience in digital releases. How can a date be asserted in that case? Do YouTube, Netflix, or any digital publisher/distributor keep a ledger of their releases?

Recent DTV releases from Warner Video, at least, have generally had press releases that have provided digital release dates in advance as well as release dates for Blu-ray/DVD.  Generally (but not always) the HD/Digital release date preceeds the home video release by two weeks.
