SOMETHING WRONG WITH HYPERLINKS

Hi. For some reason the hyperlinks for "Laverne and Shirley" and "Hill Street Blues" do not appear as they should. A is how the text should read and B is how it actually reads ::

A) Fluent in Italian, Penny Santon was often relied on to play traditional Italian-American wives and mothers in film and on television. She played Laverne DeFazio's grandmother on one episode of Laverne & Shirley (1976-1983) (in 1978) and Captain Frank Furillo's mother on Hill Street Blues (1981-1987) (two episodes; 1985-86). She appeared on Broadway in the original production of Tennessee Williams ' "The Rose Tattoo" in a similar role.

B): Fluent in Italian, Penny Santon was often relied on to play traditional Italian-American wives and mothers in film and on television. She played Laverne DeFazio's grandmother on one episode of Laverne & Shirley (1976) (in 1978) and Captain Frank Furillo's mother on Hill Street Blues (1981) (two episodes; 1985-86). She appeared on Broadway in the original production of Tennessee Williams' "The Rose Tattoo" in a similar role.

Actually, I have just noticed that the format for TV series appears to have undergone a wholesale change. It is not just one actress's IMDB page but throughout IMDB, removing the start and end years of the series and just keeping the start year, which is misleading and confusing. For example:

1) Hill Street Blues (1981–1987) -- Hill Street Blues (1981)
[link=tt0081873]

2) Laverne and Shirley (1976–1983) -- Laverne & Shirley (1976)
[link=tt0074016]

3) The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970–1977) -- The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970)
[link=tt0065314]

4) Dynasty (1981–1989) -- Dynasty (1981)
[link=tt0081856]

5) Knots Landing (1979–1993) -- Knots Landing (1979)

Rob, the database only uses the beginning date of a TV series. It never uses the spanning dates of a series.

Cheers

Ed

I only brought it here because when I checked "Laverne and Shirley" and "Hill Street Blues" after making corrections they appeared in a preview as "Laverne & Shirley (1976-1983)" and "Hill Street Blues (1981–1987)".

Also, as you can see from this trivia excerpt from Michael Conrad's page the spanning dates are included for both TV series mentioned (highlighted)
:: "Michael Conrad was a powerfully built and toweringly tall New York-born American character actor, best known for his role as the pompous but beloved desk sergeant Phil Esterhaus on Hill Street Blues (1981-1987)  ... He also played Michael Stivic (Rob Reiner )'s uncle on an early episode of All in the Family (1971-1979) , who objects to his nephew's non-religious marriage ceremony to a non-Catholic. Conrad made his television debut in 1955, and remained busy for almost 30 years, appearing in 25 TV movies. He was a familiar supporting player in movies, including The Longest Yard (1974) , and, early in his career, on stage. Conrad died from urethral cancer during the shooting of the police drama's fourth season, five weeks after his 58th birthday.

Something not adding up, it seems.

Yours.

 The top gives the link I referenced.
The Bottom method is how you get an extended link with extra info or anything you want it to say.

People who know how to use the bottom method are far and few between. So those will pop up every so often. So nothing is wrong.

Ummm, Ed. Could you do me a favor. I don't know how to preview edits (or if it is even possible on IMDB, despite all these years editing it was never really necessary before), so you could you show me what the following would look like as an approved edit as I am screwing up the hyperlinks on this one for some reason. I tried to follow the format you indicate above to add extra info but I am not sure (and, in fact, doubt) I did it right. Thanks.

You must copy and paste from the gray boxes above for it to work.
You will have to book mark this. Manually doing it, I have never done.

This is my template that I use. I just alter it to suit my needs.

I use that method in the polls I make for IMDb.

It will also work to go to external links outside imdb. Don't know if that will fly for approval though.
But I have made polls where a selection links to a music video on You Tube.

Also, I believe you will not see the results of your link until after the submission is live.
It will just show your work as typed. I think I remember doing a small link repair and it did not convert in the submission. But when the editors approved it it was working as a link. It can be tricky to do. If you make a mistake and alter it and repaste a link it screws it up. You have to be accurate on the first try. This method can be frustrating until you get used to it

Hi Rob,

If you need to link to specific titles and names within our submission interfaces, then the only way to do so is via the [link=tt0081873] format, see this guide for more details. The extended URL option that Ed advises above doesn't work for any data list.

Thanks,
Will

Hi, Rob Sieger. You would be wise to present your concerns as a feature request. For title references, the hypertext always conforms to a specific format whereby the title is followed by the year in parentheses, which in the case of series having episode releases spanning multiple years, only the start year appears in parentheses. You are more than welcome to reference specific episodes (but not necessarily in bulk), which entails the episode title appearing before the release year of the episode in parentheses.
