Sort by Release Date: Desktop Site Bug

Context
Right now if I sort my watchlist by release date on the desktop site vs mobile, there are 2 different functionalities. I use this feature a lot and it's frustrating to have to go to the mobile version for the accurate results.

Mobile Use Case (Correct Functionality)
Action: View watchlist. Sort by release date.
Result: Movies are sorted by release date, down to the day.

Desktop Site (Bug)
Action: View watchlist. Sort by release date.
Expected Result: Movies are sorted by release date, down to the day.
Actual Result: Sorts by release date, but movies that are released in the same year are shuffled within that year. Ex. If I have 3 movies in 1977 and 1 in 1978, all the 1977 films will list before the 1978 film, but the 3 1977 films are not in order of when they were released within that year. They're also not in alphabetical order. They're in seemingly random order within a year.

Note

I love IMDb!

Thanks! To clarify, when I say mobile site I meant the mobile app.

Thanks for clarifying.  Which app (iOS vs. Android) which version of the app and which device do you have?

I have the iOS app. My iPhone and app are both up-to-date. This function has always worked correctly for me on the iOS app (sorting down to the day).

However, visiting the website via a web browser, whether on desktop or mobile, and attempting to filter by release date does not filter within the year.

Bug Test
  1. Open iOS app. View a list. Sort by release date. Functions correctly (down to the day).
  2. Go to the website through a browser, whether on desktop or mobile. Sort by release date. Functions incorrectly (does not sort within a year.)

The app is version 7.16 and iOS is version 11.0. However, the app isn't the issue. The app has always functioned correctly and I've been using it regularly for about 5 months.

The issue is with accessing the site via browser and sorting by release date.

Ex. if you view my watchlist via a web browser, you'll see that, though the watchlist is sorted by release date, movies within the same year are not sorted by release date within that year.

Looking at the link above, 1979 is a great examples. That section of the list is sorted properly on the app, but when viewing it in a web browser it sorts:

  1. Mad Max: 3/21/1980 (which is weird because in the list view it says 79 but once clicking it it says 1980
  2. Apocalypse now: 8/15/1979
  3. Alien: 6/22/1979
  4. Stalker: 4/17/1980 (again, showing 1979 in the list view but 1980 when clicked)
  5. The Muppet movie: 6/22/1979
  6. etc.
Again, this functions perfectly on the app. It pulls in these dates, not just the year, and both (1) displays and (2) sorts by them when in list mode.

Why is this marked as solved? This is not solved.

I have this problem too. How come the sort order of titles inside of lists is different on the website compared to the mobile app? This has been happening for over a year now. I can't view my list on the desktop site because it lists the titles way out of order when I sort by Release Date (most recent at top) like it's not applying the same rules as the iOS app. Desktop site is totally unusable for me. The mobile app (iOS) correctly sorts by Release Date (most recent at top) but the website does not. I also can't share my lists with my friends because I want them to view them sorted by Release Date (most recent at top) and they wouldn't be viewing it correctly. Totally inconsistent experience.

For example a title will show up at a different (earlier spot) on the desktop website compared to the mobile app. Completely sorted wrong on desktop. Totally inconsistent experience.

You can view my list on desktop and iOS app to test. Sort by Release Date (most recent at top)
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls079124490/

I really think the desktop site needs an upgrade. The mobile app is by far better to use than the desktop website. The mobile app is one of my favorite apps on my phone and I like how the development gets better and better. I am a beta tester for the iOS app. The development of the website is slow and not modern.
