IMDB Data Content error

The British actor Simon Williams (Upstairs Downstairs etc) has recently had his primary name changed to Simon S. Williams (II) with most of his existing credits given an "(as Simon Williams)" attribute. Looking on Findmypast, it seems that there *was* a Simon S Williams born in the correct year, but there's no evidence that the actor has ever used his middle initial professionally. I wonder if someone has added it to distiguish him from another Simon Williams in the database, instead of using the correct (I), (II) suffix.

You might want to contact the person who made the change and find out what is going on. I've also raised this as http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000042/thread/255426131?d=255426131#255426131 on 29 March but not had a response yet. Sorry, I forgot the "Staff" prefix on that posting though I've since added it.

Thanks, yes, this is a bit of a mess.  It seems to stem from a badly worded request to split off some credits to another Simon Williams.  This name change should not have been made and we will be reverting it.

BTW please do not add "Staff" tags on Contributors Help posts as, ironically, this will actually reduce the chances of your post being seen and handled by staff.

Also you are correct to post this type of query on Get Satisfaction as Contributors Help is supposed to be reserved for policy discussions only.

No problem. Glad to have been able to help. I'll remember about no "Staff" and to use GetSatisfaction for things like this.

There was a similar confusion of names a few weeks ago with the actor Richard Hawley and the musician and the director who both also have this name. I don't have enough knowledge of which credits belong to which person, so I'm just flagging it so one of your researchers can investigate further. I first noticed it because credits for the actor were being attributed to Hawley Richard instead of Richard Hawley :-)   My *guess* is that "himself" and music department/composer credits for titles which are connected with music belong to the musician, and director credits belong to the director, but it may need a less broad-brush approach than that!

This is fixed now (unless you are on reference view in which case you will need to wait another 24-48 hours).
