A colleague of mine has a much better starmeter position than I, although I have three times as many credits. On what does that depend upon, and what can I do to improve my starmeter?

Hi, Christian Stamm.
There is an official information on this matter:
https://help.imdb.com/article/imdbpro/industry-research/starmeter-moviemeter-and-companymeter-faq/GSPB7HDNPKVT5VHC?ref_=helpsrall#
High rankings on STARmeter do not necessarily mean that something is "good." They do mean that there is a high level of public awareness and/or interest in the person. They represent what people are interested in, based not on small statistical samplings, but on the actual behavior of millions of IMDb users. Users vote through their actions, every time someone visits an IMDb page about one of the over 3 million titles and over 6 million people in the database, IMDb records that "pageview".

Your STARmeter number is based solely on how many visits happen to your page.
It also takes into account other actors page visits. Several Actors can have less visits and that would move you up because they had less activity.
I too have a page and your number is 200,000 above me.
The popularity of the titles you are in, plus the list ordering (how far from top billed) position can effect page visits. The closer to the top you are, the more of a likelihood someone visits your page.

Hi, Christian Stamm. Just to note, no two people have the same STARmeter figure. It's a ranking. Being at, for example, 100,001 means that there are only 100,000 people ahead of you, while you are ahead of some nine million or so IMDb-cataloged persons whose entries or filmography links have any hits at all. The increase or decrease of the raw score is like non-zero-sum game, but the ranking by concept is a zero-sum game. In order to move up (closer to #1, first place), you have to "knock" others out of their slots. This may require being credited in a plethora of popular titles, but in a way that sets a person apart from former "peers".

If others above him have less page visits in the same week than he does, even though he has the same page visits as the previous week, he moves up by losing no ground in visits but gains, because others above him have had less visits.

There is another way to gain also.
You have 30 less visits than the previous week. Others ahead of you have 40 less visits. You have a net effective 10+ gain and your starmeter rises on a less visit count than the week before
