As soon as I added a photo and vanity URL to my profile, i dropped about 600,000 spots on the STARmeter. Why is that? How did my additions negatively impact the algorithm?

Hi, mike.
The lower the number the higher is the person's popularity -- implementing this principle, the STARmeter rank can fluctuate greatly due to the large amount of data across IMDb. The basics of such process is explained well in the official guide:
Why does my STARmeter/MOVIEmeter rank change so much from one week to another? (the link is clickable). And the rest of guidelines there also explain:
Finally, it's very good to have a photo on page for correct identification, but it also helps to restrict the number of accidental visitors. And sure, the accidental visits are not significant for very popular profiles. A 100 visits less or more per week has no effect on the STARmeter rank for a person in the top 100, but this same change can drastically effect the name pages with a rank below 50,000 or maybe 100,000.
If a rank is 5-more-digit and very volatile (sudden and sharp increases or decreases), there seems to be no problem at all. But if the rank of a popular name has drastically dropped for more than a week, such may be the reason to address as a problem to the staff to investigate a possible glitch.

- High rankings on STARmeter do not necessarily mean that something is "good." They do mean that there is a high level of public awareness and/or interest in the person.

I went from being ranked 230,xxx to being ranked 850,xxx in 1 week. Something doesn't seem right since all I did was add my photo, add a Vanity URL and share the URL on social media. I should have went up or had a slight variation, not a drastic drop. This is a bit confusing and I think there is an element we are missing.

Mike, I have had mine spike like that too. Today is the day for the weekly update. Has it changed?

Mike as your ranking and mine are in the same area number wise, I can tell you from experience that all it takes to trend down that much is for 2 to 7 less visits in a week by people for it to drop like that. I struggle to promote myself just to keep it around 200,000. I have absolutely "0" credits. So no one is looking at my page because of what I have worked on! I went from 8,000,000 to around 225,000 because of what I do here and Facebook.

Mike, apologies for the reply above. The respondent does not have a name page and has no concept of the starmeters fluctuations patterns. Unlike him I have a name page and have watched mine vary. The reason I asked if you had done this on a Sunday or Monday is the starmeter is updated Sunday night/Monday morning. The adding of photos should not affect the ranking at all. But if you added the photos at or near the time of update that would explain the change.
If you have further questions, please ask.

I did the photo, Vanity URL and social media share all at once, so somehow by me improving the site and making it easily available, it dropped the ranking. There must be another element we are missing.

I’m in the 600,000’s now. Right direction, still lots of ground to cover again though.

Dips in STARmeters right after Memorial Day are common also. Less activity while people go on vacation.

When did you do this known for change? Sunday night into Monday Morning?

The change in rank is about fluctuations in the distribution of activity than activity in and of itself. No two pages can have the same rank, even though multiple pages can experience an increase or decrease in rank by the same amount because of the same cluster of site visitors. When you go from 200,000th place to 800,000th place, it is a sign that 600,000 people became "technically" more popular than you on average over the course of the time in which the new figures supplanted the previous figures as current.

Sunday night into Monday morning is when the weekly starmeters update.
Have you not noticed this on your graph. Each period only covers a a 7 day stretch. So you just happened to do a submission at the same time an update happened. Since I am at 200,000-300,000 myself it has dipped to 800-900 a lot. Please remember STARmeters are based on page visits in comparison to others name pages, page visits.

Again........... adding and removing things from your page HAS NOTHING to do with your STARmeter.
