On the title

the summary cast list at the top of the page lists
I've noticed this elsewhere (but can't site other titles at the moment).
Why does this happen?

the summary cast list at the top of the page lists
Stars: Alan Young, Dinah Shore, Adele Jergens | See full cast & crew »But the full cast list further down the page lists Robert Merrill as 3rd billed ahead of Adele Jergens (4th billed).

The list of stars can be set by IMDb staff independently of the cast list.
This is mentioned here:
"We are aware that casts in order of appearance or alphabetical order sometimes mean a lead actor is buried relatively deep in the cast list. This is somewhat unfortunate. We do have a separate system for indicating the lead actors via the "Stars" section, but this can only be amended internally by IMDb staff members."

Thanks Peter.
I did not consider this a Contribution issue, and therefore skipped past the Help search ("stars cast") results for IMDbPro and Contribution. Perhaps the paragraph you shared should be posted on this page too:

The stated purpose of the policy is pull the name stars out of an alphabetical or appearance ordered cast list. I can't imagine why Adele Jergens would be bumped up 1 step, above Robert Merrill. She has more film credits, but he was a big opera star. And she wasn't buried in a flurry of bit parts. She was 4th billed.
So I'm not convinced that the policy you cite really answers my question.

No, you're right. It should probably be Merrill in third position, also judging by the poster images on the page.

Similar situation here:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045317/

Fred Allen is billed 2nd, Marilyn Monroe 4th. (And 4th is plenty high for the tiny role she had.) But on the Stars, it reverses FA & MM in sequence.
