Still driving me crazy--IMDb's sensing my IP address and then displaying titles in unwanted language

I use a VPN, often a server in Italy. Despite my choosing "English' or even 'Original' in my settings for 'Title display > country/region' as well as in 'Title display language', the site is showing titles in Italian, WHICH I DON'T WANT!

PLEASE IMDb, it is such an annoying feature of your site!!! Why can't your web design team switch off this automatic determining of language based on my IP location, and let MY DECISION in my settings determine which language titles are displayed in???

Sorry for the inconvenience.  This is a known issue and it is tricky to provide the best experience due to the way we store some of the information about original titles and local titles.

Until we have a full solution, our recommendation is to go to your site settings at https://www.imdb.com/preferences/general and on the menu "Title display country" please choose "Original" which is the first item on the menu.  This will block the localization of titles which should improve things, even though there will still be some issues.

You indicate you have tried this already, so it's possible either a browser plug-in or your browser's language settings are overriding your choice. The best things to try are (a) disable all browser plug-ins, especially any ad-blockers as these can interfere with the display of our pages (b) see if the preference works on another browser on the same system (c) see if the preference works on another system if you have access to one.  If you are still experiencing problems please let us know the details of the systems and browsers which you have tried and provide specific examples of title pages which demonstrate the problem.

Thank you Col for your response. I don't understand how this issue is to do with the way you store some of the information about original and local titles. Surely it is straightfoward an issue outside or beyond this--it is to do with your website reading the originating country of my ISP. Hence, when I don't use a VPN, my IP shows as French because I live in France, and title options automatically chosen are in French. When I use an Italian VPN server, titles convert in some instances to Italian EVEN THOUGH as I've already said, my settings all specify English as primary language.

Choice of 'Original' creates a mixed blessing, the pluses are that as many titles are UK or American films titles are displayed in English. But minuses abound because I also download Iranian, French, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, etc, films and their titles display in the corresponding national languages albeit in Latin characters, so that I have no idea of their meaning. Occasionally a subtitle will be present in English; or French for some Iranian films where the director favours French.

Anyway, I take your point about potentially other factors influencing. But to have to turn off a number of adblockers I use in both Chrome (on my iMac) and Safari (on my iPad), as I'm sure you'll acknowledge, would be a pain in the posterior, as after exiting IMDb I would have to every time go and enable them again.

I will try other browsers to see if there's a difference. Also I should try using the app on my iPad, and see if there's any difference.

But to revisit my original thought--can you not disable IMDb's sensing of visitor's IP country and give precedence to choice of language users select in their preferences? This to me seems the sensible and most effective option.

Thank for your time. Best wishes

Peter
