Nominations are coming on Tuesday and I always make this yearly poll. This is just a head up so that once ready the poll can de published as soon as possible as it will be more succesful closer to the announcement.
Once we know the nominees I'll have a first list tuesday morning and I will be eager to read what surprised you so I can add it as an option and have everything ready that day.

I'm not very surprised because the rumors pointed to this, but Black Panther nominated for Best Film ?? Marketing at its best... Extraordinary job from the producers in marketing strategy because the movie isn't that great but I'm not necessarily saying that it's bad. I just don't think that it's a Oscar contender but what I know??
P.s: I'm not saying this because it's a superhero movie, in fact I like a lot this genre but I don't think that Black Panther it's a worth Contender... Unfortunately The Dark Knight was in the period of some reluctance by the Oscars

The Dark Knight should have been a contender, and I also think other films were better than Black Panther, it is added.
I agree 100% with you. The Dark Knight is the only superhero movie that really deserved a Oscar nomination for Best Picture but like I say, it was released in a time of some Reluctance from the Oscars. It was more than a Superhero movie, it transcends more than that.

completely agreed. While I think Black Panther was not necessarily a bad film, there were tens if not hundreds of films at leastg on the same level. But lets be honest here, the idea of a Black superhero film is right up liberal Hollywood's alley. The argument how much money it made is also not really relevant to me. If they take that into consideration, they should have gone for the infinitely superior Infinity War. And while we're at it, please give Brolin that supporting nod too. Thatg one getting nothing except visual effects is kinda bad joke too.

Great idea! My most surprising was Emily Blunt - she had two pretty great performances this year! What on earth?
I'm also going with Won't You Be My Neighbor. I actually thought this one's gonna win. all the love for Buster Scruggs surprised me in a positive way. so did Dafoe's nomination, had a feeling his momentum was all gone. Cooper no director nod was a positive surprise. Same for the lack of Washington for Best Actor.
Won't You Be My Neighbor was one of the biggest surprises for Me. Here in Mexico the Best Documentary race rarely gets any interest since those films are never released in our screens, but even with that lack of attention I had heard it was a great film and enormous favourite, my first impression looking at the nominees for the first time was its absence.

'Very good poll except I can't understand what's at all surprising about Willem Dafoe's nomination for acting in 'At Eternity's Gate.' His performance was critically acclaimed (as his performances usually are) and received several nominations, including a Golden Globe nod. He was nod nominated for a SAG award but that was widely considered to be a curious snub.
Otherwise, there are so many options that are so right-on. My vote will most likely go to 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' which is even more unbelievable than Nicole Kidman getting snubbed. 'Bohemian Rhapsody' being on the same list with the exquisite 'Roma' and very accomplished 'The Favorite' actually made me cranky yesterday, lol.

Ethan Hawke was far more critically acclaimed than Dafoe. Besides, the latter was considered the frontrunner for a long time, but ended up virtually empty in terms of wins. I was surprised he got in to be honest. But I like it. And how can you mention Bohemian Rhapsody being undeserving to be on the list with The FavoUrite and Roma when stuff like Black Panther and, even worse, A Star is Born is getting in.
I haven't seen Dafoe's performance so I don't have a personal opinion, but when making this yearly poll I try to cover all my bases. First I add my personal surprises, then I see the poll board suggestions for more, then I add anything missing from the list IMDb releases and finally I check the lists and opinions from the award news sites. I don't personally agree with all options, but I try to be inclusive, and that's as Dafoe entered the list, several sites mentioned him as a surprise.
