"And here are the all-male nominees..."

I wonder how you concluded that there was an unprecedented number of films made by women directors?

Unprecedented is a pretty strong word. http://www.dictionary.com/browse/unprecedented
Jen do you have any sources you can cite to back up this claim?

I got to back Jen on this one...There has been a steady rise in the number of female directors but this year it's A LOT more....Kind of like on a scale never seen before?

Almost....I don't know....Unprecedented?

I love this poll, but I'm not sure if this year really had an unprecedented number. I took a quick look o Google to see if I could find a source for that, but I couldn't -- of course, maybe I just couldn't find one. If you could find out if that claim is true, that'd be great. If not, maybe change the language a bit? Like "a strong showing" or something like that? Or "possibly unprecedented?"

I just found this and, although it's about 2016, it makes me wonder:

Maybe some language could be pulled from this:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2017/06/16/10-major-milestones-women-directors-hollywood/...

Or perhaps, instead of claiming "unprecedented," just something about women directors reaching a number of milestones - the poll could easily take off from there in a way that totally makes sense.

Jen,

I could not find any definitive article supporting your proposition that the number of women directors is unprecedented for 2017. One way to assess the proposition would be to use your selection criteria of 6.0 stars and 2.000 votes for 2015 and 2016 to count the number of films directed by women.

2017 has 24 titles that apply.
Using the same parameters 2016 has 9 and 2015 has 17.

What criteria are those? I started counting female directors in a search for feature films from 2016 with more than 2000 votes and over 6.0. I got to 10 before I was even halfway through.

Women directors, feature films, more than 2K votes, rated 6.0 or more stars, appearing in the first 200 films on the list, sorted by popularity:

#18 - Me Before You (Thea Sharrock)
#37 - Grave (Julia Ducournau)
#67 - The Edge of Seventeen (Kelly Fremon Craig)
#90 - Maudie (Aisling Walsh)
#96 - Ballerina (Paulette Victor-Lifton and Mimi Maynard with two male directors)
#102 - Their Finest (Lone Scherfig)
#121 - American Honey (Andrea Arnold)
#133 - Bridget Jones's Baby (Sharon Maguire)
#134 - Toni Erdmann (Maren Ade) - I missed this one before
#135 - Kung Fu Panda 3 (Jennifer Yuh Nelson and a male director)
#138 - A United Kingdom (Amma Asante) - I missed this one before
#140 - Money Monster (Jodie Foster) - I missed this one before
#147 - The Whole Truth (Courtney Hunt) - I missed this one before
#158 - Certain Women (Kelly Reichardt)
#161 - Miracles from Heaven (Patricia Riggen)
#171 - Koe no katachi (Naoko Yamada) - I missed this one before
#191 - Our Kid of Traitor (Susanna White)
#198 - The Love Witch (Anna Biller)

18 films - that was my error. But still 75% of the number from 2017.

Jen,

In that case, unprecedented is probably justified.
