These four people are the only ones to have directed and starred in movies that won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, and one of them did it twice. Whose work do you think is the most impressive?

You mean work as these specific movies, not the whole 'body of work'?

Correct. Their work with these particular movies in terms of acting and directing.

I realize they didn't win Oscars for acting (or were even nominated) but I think it's hard enough to direct movies, and even harder having a lead role while directing. So they deserve credit for it. :)

The problem is that I can see many voters vote for Eastwood because he made the most prestigious or most critically acclaimed movies, but Eastwood had already made Westerns before "Unforgiven", and "Million Dollar Baby" is an emotional knock-out and a triumph of acting but there's nothing cinematically fancy or groundbreaking about it. As for "Annie Hall", it's a classic but it's the culmination of Allen's zany period with a romantic twist. He was reaching the peak of his creativity.

But seriously, in 1990 no one could imagine that of all the actors, it would be Kevin Costner to make an epic like "Dances With Wolves". Same with "Braveheart", these movies look like something David Lean would have made or directors with at least two decades of experience, yet it's two box-office bankable stars, and sex symbols who achieved it. Now, that's impressive if you asked me.

So, I'm hesitating between the two options but I'm pretty sure the votes will go for the most popular movies anyway, which isn't exactly what the question is about.

I'd vote Dances with Wolves for the same reason (and because I prefer it over Braveheart).

Allen in general and Annie Hall here, although Unforgiven was very good. I saw Dances with Wolves so long ago that I couldn't even rate it now although, at the time, I think I was really impressed.
