The makers of the long-running British TV show Doctor Who have announced that the next Doctor will, for the first time since its premiere in 1964, be played by a woman, actress Jodie Whittaker. How do you feel about this development?

List: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls068913013

Help me out - does this photo show a set from Doctor Who, or something else?

We'll see. I'll wait to see to out it shakes out. Male or female cast the right person for the role; that said the law of averages say at least one female should have been cast by now.

FYI Your backlink is improperly set and misdirects here: Suggestion: Biopic Dream Casting

Jen,

It's about time! It's long overdue!

This picture shows the 13th Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) in the TARDIS of the 12th Doctor (Peter Capaldi). It is a set from Doctor Who.

“ This is terrible. The Doctor has always been male and I'm afraid of change. ”

This opinion is as valid as the others but the word "afraid" is too negative. It's not the change that might bother but the fact that it's a major upheaval in the history of the show.

I've never been a fan of these changes, female Doctor Who, black James Bond etc. seems like publicity stunts disguised as progressive moves if you ask me. But the day there'll be an unattractive fat and average-looking James Bond, that would be a real revolution.

+Sdk ElMaruecan: What the heck is the matter with you, dude?  Has the whole-wide world gone sexist around here?  What the heck is the problem with a female "Doctor Who"?  I mean, the people who made the "James Bond" films were also discussing the possibility of making "Bond" into a woman, or even so making him black, which means that Idris Elba might have taken over as "Bond".  But now, those ideas have been scrapped because it looks like Daniel Craig is going to have one more go at being "Bond".  And in any case, the rumors were already going around that the "Doctor" was going to take the form of a woman, meaning that an actress was going to take over the role when Peter Capaldi ends his run this year.  So with all due respect, Mr. ElMaruecan, you should have gotten used to the whole idea by now and learned to live with it.  And I understand that change isn't always popular to some, but it is an inevitable and necessary part of life, both in the real world and in make-believe, and so the best we can all do is grin and bear it.  So my friendly advice to you is, wait until the new season of "Doctor Who" premieres and see how this new "Doctor" fairs before you make any quick judgment.  As Hank Williams, Jr. says in one of his songs, "you can't judge a book just by looking at the cover", if you get my drift.  Think about what I've just said, okey-dokey?  Thanks for listening, and have a nice day, you hear?

You're looking for negativity when there's none and I don't like the tone of your post, let me tell you that.

I'm so modern you wouldn't believe it actually.., but to be honest, I'm kind of a purist when it comes to characters' physical/gender/ethnic canons', I would have reacted the same if one proposed a male version of Ellen Ripley or a Latin version of Superman.

An auteur like Miyazaki didn't need to feminize iconic male characters to create original, appealing and asskicking female heroines, this is why I'm discussing the sincerity behind these casting choices, and if the notions of 'marketing' and 'publicity' weren't also present in the brainstorm that lead to the decision.

Again, it's not against "Doctor Who", I never watched the show actually, but it's the whole trend that kind of bothers me. It wouldn't prevent me to watch a show or a film, it doesn't bother me to that point, so we're just talking about "bothering".

Now, should I have been afraid to expose my feelings so I wouldn't pass for a sexist (which i'm not)? Have you ever questioned the kind of attitude a rant like yours just encourages?  the less we say, the better, is that right?

And you should delete your next post where you ask someone to explain to me, we're talking right now together, no need for an intermediary.

Good day!

Digger,

Please keep your comments civil. We do not need flame wars on the GS IMDb Poll board.

ElM,

I understand your perspective of maintaining the integrity of characters. In the case of The Doctor, there have been hints about Time Lords changing gender dating back to when Lalla Ward played Romana.

What the heck is the matter with you, dude?  Has the whole-wide world gone sexist around here?

Well, he's the one who started. I never patronize or label anyone as anything such as sexist, or racist, or homophobic without  trying to clear what can be a misunderstanding.

I admit it, I am totally ignorant of the history of the show, of the show itself as a matter of fact, it was just my "mini-rant" against a phenomenon that has become in my opinion too trendy to be  driven by pure and noble intentions.

Now, I'm able to contextualize the project, and I understand it's not as if we were talking about a female James Bond. By that I mean that it's something fans saw coming.

+Dan Dassow:  I assure you, I meant no harm in my comment toward Sdk ElMaruecan in regards to this message forum.  In fact, I'm planning on writing to him again immediately and apologizing to him for overstepping myself in what I said to him.  Maybe I did come come on a little too strong towards him by accusing him of being "sexist", but that's only because that's the way his first posting sounded like, and I happen to be a staunch opponent of Sexism, and perhaps that caused me to get a little carried away when writing to him.  But let me say again that I wasn't trying to stoke any fire when I sent him a message.  In fact, what he called "ranting" when he replied to my post, I thought that I was being kind of philosophical, which I rarely when chatting with people online.  Anyways, I'll try to explain to that I didn't mean to offend him and hope that he'll be forgiving and all that.  And you have my solemn word of honor that this will not happen again.  I will be more careful with what I say in the near future, you dig?

That's precisely the kind of misunderstanding I'm talking about, I'm glad to read that your post wasn't intended as a verbal assault but hazard made me read first the one you wrote to dgranger and I'm sorry to say it didn't sound a bit friendly toward my person.

Now, I know from experience that we all have a 'button' one should never push, and it kind of biases our perceptions, not just you, everybody. If you're that allergic to sexism, obviously, you'll read my post as a stance against the female casting of Doctor Who. To get philosphical, there's always intention in perception.

I try to avoid these sensitive polls because I know anything about politics, religion, gender and race will lead to a heated discussion, one way or another, without having necessarily someone who's wrong and someone who's right. And this is why I personally suggest polls that are immune to controversy, at least i try.

Anyway, speaking for myself, i'm cool now.. I also had a tough day and maybe I let off some anger in my post..

+Sdk ElMarucan:  I'm glad that you contacted me and pointed out to me about my post to dgranger.  I made that post before Dan Dassow sent me a post asking me to keep my comments civil so as not to upset anyone or cause a civil war or anything like that.  I've taken the liberty of deleting that post from this board.  And while I'm at it, let me say also that I'm very sorry that I upset you by calling you a 'Sexist' and everything.  It was purely unintentional.  It just that I'm a staunch opponent of sexism, and also of racism, anti-semitism, fascism and homophobia, and it only seemed to me from what I read in your post about you not liking the idea of a female "Doctor Who" as being sexist.  But perhaps I did come on a little too strong towards you, and didn't know all the facts, and for that I'm sorry also.

And by the way, that last part in your post where you said that you "let off some anger in your post..."?  You don't have anything to be sorry about there.  You had every right to be upset.  After all, I had no right to judge you without knowing anything about you.  In fact, from what you said in your previous post about not knowing anything about politics, religion, race, gender, etc., I think you and I have something in common.  I also avoid talking about stuff like that with anyone because not everyone shares the same viewpoints that I do, and it can lead to unpleasant debates, and that's precisely what Dan Dassow was trying to tell me to avoid when he posted me.

And so, dude, what do you say the two of us just bury the hatchet between us and forget this stinkin' mess ever happened, you dig?  Wanna share a proverbial "Peace-Pipe"?

"shake-hands"

No problemo... of course, some subjects are hotter than others, and they're likely to cause passionate reactions that can sound like anger or hostility, it's not as if people have normal discussions where they can see each other and read the body languages. Sometimes, I wonder if that wasn't the main reason for IMDb shutting down the message boards, not that I approved the decision but you could tell many users, without being trolls, were getting their kicks by provoking people.

Neither you or I are in this category so all is well that ends well.

I'm pleased that you've forgiven me.  And I assure you once more that I wasn't trying to provoke you or anything.  And I didn't think that I was "ranting" when I was telling you all that stuff the first time that I sent you a post.  I thought that I was being philosophical when I talked to you.  Of course, in all fairness, dude, I'm really not much of a philosopher, and I was just lucky to have thought up all that stuff that I said to you, and please don't ask me where it came from, because I couldn't tell you even if I knew, you dig?

And BTW, you're not the only one who is miffed that the message boards on the IMDb website are shut down before I had a chance to use them.  The reason I couldn't use boards is because my account on that website wasn't authenticated, and it couldn't be because I didn't have a cell-phone of my own to give the number from it to them so that they can send me a S.M.S. message, and that would authenticate my account and I can use the message boards.  And I was told by the moderators of this community support forum that I can only talk about movies and T.V. shows and about polling my favorite episodes from shows and movies and things of that nature, and not about personal stuff or to chat with other people on the forum, like what you and I are doing right now.

Which reminds me, I think that I better stop typing and send this post to you right now before I get us both in hot water with the brasses for "personal chit-chat".  So again, it was a pleasure talking with you, and I'm happy that we're able to let bygones be bygones, and I look forward to our next friendly debate.  Until then...

PEACE OUT, DUDE!

Digger and Sdk ElMaruecan, I sorry that I had caused an arguement here to which I can tell from your replies that mentioned me that was the cause of this when I wasn't trying too. Yes digger, I did not read your comment, but now I'm interested in what you were saying.
Please understand that my viewpoint . I wasn't 't trying to be sexist. I agree a lot with Sdk ElMaruecan's viewpoint that a lot of this big brew ha-ha is being created for publicity and promotion. My stance is that this big thing about "The first Female Doctor" is not all that big of a deal if one paid attention to the show and remembered Romana and River Song as Female Time Lords. Also the Time lords' act of regeneration bares a striking resemblance to the act of reincarnation. And gender switching is a big piece of the philosophy or belief of reincarnation.
The trouble is that the linear thinking of the various degrees between love and hate in this poll did not allow the true opposite third option of that linear thinking which was "No Big Deal" which the knowledge of Romana and River Song allowed.
And, yes, I do a lot of polls on women because I like doing something different and sometimes I see things that I react too Understand I am a man.
And besides, that in this day and age, I truly think that this thing of having a female in traditional male roles in the media has lost a lot of it's edge, uniqueness and shock value. How many times have you seen a female pirate, truck driver, President, Vice President, Prime minister, Lawyer, Judge, police officer, detective, hit woman, doctor (medical this time), and surgeon in movies or on T.V. lately? A lot of times. I have, at least.

Update: Don't bother, I still had the email notice of the post in my email.

+dgranger:  You have nothing to be sorry about, because you didn't do anything wrong.  The problem was me.  I wrongfully thought that I was seeing sexism at work here when there clearly wasn't, and I simply overreacted and got too emotional, that's all.  Please permit me to explain myself to you and everyone who reads this.  I'm a Liberal Democrat, and I live at home with my mom and dad who are Conservative Republicans, and although I love them very much, and I know that they love me and would do anything for me, and have done for me my whole life, I might add; unfortunately, my viewpoints and their viewpoints on every day life are quite different.  By that, I mean that I don't share their political, social, economical, or even their religious views.  In fact, I shouldn't even be talking to you right now about all this, because I know that this community forum isn't for personal chit-chat and talking about like that, and I could get the both of us in trouble if I continue.  But, I think you get the general idea, right?  So anyways, don't worry about blaming yourself for causing any friction between Sdk and myself.  He and I have worked that all out between us, and everything is 5-by-5 now.  So let's just not bring it up amymore, okey-dokey?

Jen, I basically have one problem with this list. You do not include the shocking answer I would have given which is "So what is the big deal? She is not the first female Time Lord on the show! So it was just a matter of time before the Doctor became a female too." One of the female companions of Tom Bakers' Dr. Who was a female Time Lord, Romana (played by
Mary Tamm and Lalla Ward*).
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0848693/?r...
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0911677/?r...
Techinally, River Song (played by Alex Kingston http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005094/ ) is a Time Lord too.
So it was just a matter of time before the Doctor became a female too.

*There is a point when the Dr. Doctor was shock to see that Romana regenerated herself to look like Princess Astra. Appearently the time lords can control the regeneration process to some extent. Obliviously an attempt to explain why they kept Lalla Ward and dumped Mary Tamm.

I suppose perhaps that I type everything in bold text so that it's either more readable, or so that it's not ordinary, or maybe for both reasons, take your pick.

Alright, Jen.  Now please try to understand.  I didn't mean to sound like I was being insulting or condescending or hostile towards you when I answered you back.  It just seemed like you were telling me what to do, and I don't like being told what to do by anyone.  I get enough of that here in my home with my mom and dad with whom I still live with.  But anyways, I'm very sorry about the things I said in my reply to you, and I will do as you ask, and I will post my messages in the normal fashion from now on, beginning with this one.  So, would you like to be my friend again, and vice-versa?
