In the '40s five visionary filmmakers enlisted in the armed forces and used their skills behind the camera to aid the war effort. They made films from instructional shorts about venereal disease to documentaries focused on particular battles to features exploring the effects of post traumatic stress disorder. Once the war ended they returned home to great acclaim and incorporated what they had lived through into their new films. Their stories are now being explored in a new three-part documentary, Five Came Back, available on Netflix starting March 31.

Which of these directors made the greatest films about war in their lifetime?
