Maurice Chevalier inspired Lumière in "Beauty And The Beast".

According to the Disney Wiki it was the Lumière Brothers, Fred Astaire and Pepe Le Pew who inspired the character.

Several characters in La Belle et la Bête (1991) are an homage to characters in the 9-time Academy Award-winning Gigi (1958): Lumiere is a tribute to Maurice Chevalier, perfectly impersonated by Jerry Orbach. The main male protagonist's name is Gaston, with a similar air of confidence as Gaston from Gigi. When Gigi rebuffs him in the 1958 film, it is similar to when Belle rebuffs Gaston and both sing a self righteous song of indignation. Gaston of Beauty and the Beast is not redeemed in the end however unlike Gigi's Gaston. Beauty and the Beast is itself a take on the classic french novel La Belle et la Bete. Though not the same source material, both being french themed, Disney's adaptation of Beauty and the Beast pays homage to great French actors and themes past in Gigi. Watching Gigi will lead to a greater appreciation of Beauty and the Beast. Jerry Orbach intended Lumiere's voice to be similar to Maurice Chevalier's, and even pays tribute to him in the middle of the "Be Our Guest" number (right as he says "course by course, one by one..."

Jen, I rarely argue with an online source. But this time I will have too because I own the Laserdisc, the VHS, and the DVD special edition of "Beauty And The Beast" and the extra material on both the laser disc and the DVD both say that Lumiere is based on Chevalier. In fact, take a good look at the "Be Our Guest" number because, as ElMaruecan said, right at "course by course, one by one..." Lumiere is using the cap and cane exactly the same way Chevalier used his trademark straw hat and cane when singing. Yes wearing a straw hat, titled at an angle, was Chevalier's trademark. Also the Disney and Chevalier admired each other so much that Chevalier had agreed to sing "The Aristocats" in "The Aristocats" for almost virtually nothing. Oh yeah, Lumiere was inspired by Chevalier.
The funny thing about you saying "Pepe La Pew"is that while Chuck Jones based the character on the personality of a screenwriter, Tedd Pierce, voice actor Mel Blanc based his performance on Charles Boyer's performance of Pepe Le Moko in "Algiers".

So did Chevalier but not as much as the Orbach ski slope nose they on Lumiere. But I guess they had to do that to fit onto a slim candlestick and candelabra Chevalier's protruding lower lip and heavy jaw line. There are several charactures of him online with that lower lip, jaw, and nose.

I voted for Bela Lugosi in the IMDd poll, whose Dracula role inspired the "Fantasia" character of Chernabog. And amazing enough, my vote put him in second place. How about that?
