Live Poll: Is Acting in Prequels Ever a Good Idea?

The defeat of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) is just another example of an unsuccessful prequel. So why would an actor EVER want to play an established character in a prequel, with such potential failure on the horizon? Seems like a zero-sum game.

So the question is, despite this conclusion, which of these actors in a prequel do you think actually gave the best performance?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls029293048

* De Niro as Don Corleone is, of course, the exception that proves the rule and, thus is not included

Evan and Bruce are not the same person.

Doesn't change the fact that using "just one example" of a failed prequel as evidence that all prequels are doomed to fail is flawed logic.

Hi, lapoubelle. Sure, but you could have come up with a more congruent example, right?

I have no doubt that Christensen performed to the satisfaction of Lucas. See. That's the issue really. Also, the makeup artists and hair stylists also decorated the actor to the author's satisfaction. Lucas wanted a complaining "mannequin" (who in hindsight behaves like a stereotypical Millennial) on the screen, and he got it.

I have almost no problem whatsoever with Christensen and Lucas in that matter. The only slight problem was his voice which never quite fit with a few scenes, but overall Christensen delievered a good performace in, at least, Revenge of the Sith

Not a fan of Attack of the Clones, but I don't get all the prequel hate as I like Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith. Sure, both movies are not perfect and likely never lived up to the hype, but they have far more redeeming qualities then most people would care to admit these days, afraid to oppose the popular opinion.

It is largely psychological but also circumstantial. In the time from 1983 and to 1999, the fans of the Star Wars franchise had built up a lot of expectations (perhaps misguided ones) about what the stories of Episodes I, II and III would be like. There is no telling how much backstory fan fiction was written during that time span.

Other things were going on as well, George Lucas, the founder of Industrial Light & Magic, started out as a sort of titan of visual effects, but a number of other filmmakers (especially James Cameron) wound up rising to and surpassing the stature of the author of Star Wars.

Marcia Lucas, who had been married to George Lucas until the mid-1980s, was instrumental to making the Star Wars original trilogy, but the divorce probably led to George Lucas having to defend the businesses he had founded from being split or siphoned. As would be expected, she did not participate in subsequent Lucasfilm productions.

Lawrence Kasdan was, perhaps due to awkward timing, unavailable to participate in the development let alone the production of Episode I. Steven Spielberg may have taken some interest in the project but is known to have clearly allowed George Lucas to be one responsible for the creative process behind completing the Star Wars hexalogy, since perhaps creative freedom is a very big deal in the franchise, a franchise that is not necessarily well-understood by people besides Lucas. When Episode I was released, the project may have become even less interesting to various scriptwriters and filmmakers who had worked with Lucas before the 1990s or so.

George Lucas' passions and prejudices, like anybody's, evolved throughout the time from 1975 to 1997. The Phantom Menace was not the first movie set in the Star Wars universe to bring a child character into the thematic fray, as there had been the The Ewok Adventure. Embattled and potentially-embattled children have been a small or major element in Star Wars since the mid-1980s after the original trilogy was released.

Anyway, there was a massive jet lag in the emergence of the cult bandwagon of disgust for the Star Wars prequel trilogy. It was not until a little while after Episode III was released, in 2005, that fans really started communicating their dissatisfaction with the prequels, so in a way, they gave the trilogy as chance, hoping improvements (and the avoidance of new problems) would be made upon previous installments of the trilogy. As if to add insult to injury, in the era of optical discs, Lucasfilm released the original unaltered trilogy only on DVD (mastered without anamorphic scaling from the LaserDisc release rather than remastered from filmstock) and only in a limited time frame, whereas every release to a new medium was altered in some way, as has been done so since the release of Special Edition cuts in 1997.

The real victim of the prequel curse wasn't Christensen but Jake Lloyd... his story is simply heartbreaking.

The actors (and the casting directors for that matter) are rarely the problem but rather the scriptwriters, scene directors, acting coaches, script supervisors or scene editors are. Regardless, they all have a part in making sure that the character is portrayed in a way that does not violate the boundaries of reason surrounding the continuity of the part of the story that was previously published. Under what circumstances should an actor turn down a part that represents a younger rendition of an established performance? I'm not sure, but it might be wise for the actor to insist, if possible, that the older and previous actor serve as a consultant in the direction process or the acting process.

A good example of what you suggest is Young Sheldon (2017– ). Jim Parsons suggested the television series and does the narration.
