Live Poll: Radio Is a Sound Salvation!

While it's not as popular as it was several decades ago, the radio can provide entertainment for every taste - news, advice, all sorts of music and more. Which of these DJ characters would you most want to listen to in reality?

List: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls025976303
Poll: http://www.imdb.com/poll/dr5Y--SQZUg/

Some photos TK

* While the list is nearly full, I'd love to get some suggestions, especially if I missed any major ones. To make room I'd probably drop some where the radio isn't such a big part of the plot.

** I didn't include K-Billy's Super Sounds of the '70s since, while it provides some fun (and scary) musical moments, but it is not necessary for the story.

Jen,

FYI: Garrison Keiller started out as the morning drive-time DJ for KSJN, the public radio station for Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. A Prairie Home Companion originally was broadcast locally on KSJN before it was syndicated for NPR.

I believe you are combining the concept of DJ with radio host and radio personality. You may wish to use radio performer instead of DJ.

You probably know I used WLT for Prairie Home as that was the station the film is set in. Will change DJ, thanks.

Jen,

WLT makes sense for A Prairie Home Companion (2006), since the movie fictionalizes the home radio station.

jen...i love it!....

having spent most of my life on air, this really touches me personally...plus, you did an incredible job with the list....(the only movie i didn't see mentioned here was 'radioland murders', which might contain a few more suggestions for you....not that you need any more)...

but so many great choices already...and even though it would be so easy for me to vote for dr. johnny fever, (who i would indeed listen to), even more so, being the nighthawk that i am, i would always turn on venus flytrap as well...so i believe my vote would go to venus...

Glad you like it.

I haven't seen Radioland Murders - could you help me out with the info for it? And maybe you could check and see if you know any of the missing info (especially the call letters for a few and the location for Dear White People and Parlez-moi de vous.

Did you ever watch Martin and, if so, can you tell me what kind of show he did?

Although I loved the radio parts, of course, my favorite moments from WKRP were when Andy and Venus would be pranking each other, stealing the chair and running around the office late at night.

But, of course, BOOGER!

classic stuff jen...

as far as martin goes, only saw it a couple of times...never really remembered much about his radio gig...the few episodes i saw were mostly an insignificant comedy about him and his significant other...

never saw dear white people or parlez-moi de vous, so can't be much help there either...

as far as radioland murders goes, i remember the two leads, brian benben and mary stuart masterson, and a slew of comic talents like harvey korman and jeffrey tambor, but in front of the mic the most significant player was probably corbin bernsen...

sorry i was such a dry font of information for ya'...

Great list, Jen. It pays affectionate tribute to some great iconic (and overlooked) cinematic characters while also capturing the imagination. I personally would limit it to fictional characters, but that's just me. I'd also add Supersoul from Vanishing Point. Still, my top pic would have to be Barry Champlin. I'd love to hear him put our current state of affairs on full blast.

Since I'm already in a bind with 37 I think I'll leave him off. Any suggestions of who I should cut?

Jen,

I also found it hard to choose which two to remove to get this to 35 choices.

I recommend removing the two crowds from your poll:

29 of 37
The Italian champions of autonomist Marxism, politics and other free-flowing content - Radio Alice, Bologna, Italy

32 of 37
One of the many other DJs on Pirate Radio such as DJ "Doctor" Dave, "Thick Kevin", Angus "The Nut" Nutsford, music and news - Radio Rock, anchored in the North Sea

I half agree with you. Pirate Radio can go. But I think Radio Alice is important enough politically and historically that it needs to stay. It's also one of the few non-English films on the list... :/

----------EDIT-------------

I think I'll combine Catherine Duke and Bill McNeal from NewsRadio. While I loved her I don't think Catherine is a strong enough contender on her own.

Argh!

I can't seem to find out what kind of DJ Jodie Foster is...

Maybe I could make one for TV characters and one for movie folks...
