IMDb is saddened to announce the death of celebrated screenwriter and author William Goldman, at the age of 87. Goldman, the brother of Oscar-winning author James Goldman, is best known for his many classic screenplays, including Oscar-winners Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and All the President's Men (1976), but he also wrote some plays and 25 books, including novels, non-fiction and memoirs. His highly-recommended non-fiction books and memoirs are of particular interest to fans and scholars as they tell both juicy, behind-the-scenes stories and give practical advice on screenwriting.

This item from the Trivia section of TPB makes me laugh:

Writer William Goldman was on set during one of the flame burst scenes in the forest when Robin Wright's dress caught fire. Although Goldman knew this was intentional, he was so caught up in the moment that he shouted, "Her dress is on fire!", thus ruining the take.

I remember that TCM host, Ben Mankiewicz, commenting recently before William Goldman's death that Goldman stated that:
“Nobody knows anything...... Not one person in the entire motion picture field knows for a certainty what's going to work. Every time out it's a guess and, if you're lucky, an educated one.”
