Taggart - Killer

Hullo,
To quote IMDb guidelines: "In some cases, TV movies or specials are created with no intention of going to series, however, they become so popular that one ends up being commissioned. On these occasions, we would prefer to keep the original TV Movie separate, as was originally intended, even if it is subsequently packaged as part of the overall series in future airings and DVD releases."
This relates perfectly to "Killer", a TV movie which features the first appearance of DCI Jim Taggart. Despite this fact, it was not produced as an episode of the series "Taggart", it doesn't bear that title or brand anywhere on the episode, nor was it at first intended as a pilot, but as a stand-alone film. It even aired two years before the real first episode of "Taggart" aired. And yet it's listed as an episode of the "Taggart" series (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0716630/). How do I correct this or can I rely on you to do so?

Best wishes,
Mateja

Hi Mateja -

In these instances, where the title was first released as a stand-alone film, you will need to submit that title as it's own film listing on the site.  We will then still retain the episode title as part of the series, however, the episode page will be a shell of the film title (ie. it will not include any cast/crew credits) and the only data on the episode title page should be a Movie Connection and Trivia item linking it to the separate stand-alone title.

If you need further assistance making these changes please let us know!

Hullo,
I'm not sure that's the right thing to do as "Killer" has never been aired as part of the series "Taggart" at all. It's just a wholly different entity that was later spun off into a series. Following the guidelines, I believe it should be a different title altogether like "The Marcus-Nelson Murders" in relation to "Kojak" say or the "Buffy" movie in relation to the "Buffy" series.

Best wishes,
Mateja

HI Mateja -

Thanks for clarifying.  If I understand correctly, "Killer" was never released as an episode of "Taggart", is that correct?  If so, then you are exactly right, the title should not be listed as an episode of that series and should be removed from the site.  You can either request the removal of the episode title listing by selecting the "Title -> Delete a title" option on our Contact Form, or if there is relevant information on the episode title page you can merge the episode title with the stand-alone title.

With either option above, you will need to submit "Killer" as a new title listing on the site.  You can find detailed information on how to submit a new title under our Help section.  Cheers!

Hullo again,
I am sorry to be a bore, but could I simply change the title of "Killer" from "Taggart 1.01 - Killer" to "Killer (1983) (TV)"?

Best wishes,
Mateja

That's it exactly. It aired as a separate, unrelated TV movie. It has since been released on DVD together with "Taggart" but it has never been aired under the title "Taggart" or as part of that series.

I shall do as instructed.

Best wishes,
Mateja

Hi Mateja,

Thanks for your response.

Are you able to provide any additional evidence to help us verify this episode should be taken out of the TV Series?

Once we have this, we can review this further for you.

Hullo,
What sort of evidence would you need?
If you go and watch the TV movie in question ("Killer") you will see it features none of the hallmarks of the "Taggart" series. It doesn't display that title anywhere nor does it feature the trademark music. Furthermore, it was broadcast two years before the series officially began with the episode "Dead Ringer". It is the exact same situation as with "The Marcus-Nelson Murders" which later spun-off "Kojak". It was written as a one-off without a series in mind.

Best wishes,
Mateja

Hi Mateja -

I found several online sources that mentioned that "Killer" ran as a TV mini-series in three parts.  If this is the case, please submit this title as a separate title series on the site.  With regard to "Taggart", if the episode title is actually "Dead Ringer", please submit the applicable title and data corrections through our online Update form and our editors will take a look.

Let us know if you encounter any problems or have further questions.

"Dead Ringer" is the actual first episode of "Taggart".
"Killer" did indeed air over three nights, but then again most episodes of the first few seasons of "Taggart" did but are listed as single episodes on IMDb.

Best wishes,
Mateja

I've submitted "Killer" as a separate title. (180530-013346-097000) I've copied the previous entry with a few minor corrections.
Will you now remove it from the "Taggart" series page and change "Dead Ringer" to 1.1 or should I?

Hi Mateja -

The incorrect episode has now been removed form the "Taggart" series, and the episode for "Dead Ringer" has been adjusted with the correct episode number.  Cheers!

Thanks, Michelle. When the "Killer" mini-series shows up I'll add the episodes, their corresponding casts, and any further tidbits I can muster up. Just a minor heads up on two minor points for IMDb editors to consider:

1. Most of the episodes (bar a few specials) from series 1-13 aired over three nights. You can find correct info on this on Wikipedia although the way the episodes are divided into seasons there is incorrect.
2. The series title should now be changed to "Taggart" (1985-2010).

Thanks for helping me out on this. I know I've probably bored you silly with all this "Taggart" talk, but I suppose both of our's aim is to make the information on IMDb as accurate as possible.

Best wishes,
Mateja

Hi Mateja -

Thanks for confirming the additional needed changes, the series start year has now been updated.  Concerning your mention of the episodes airing over a period of three nights, if you find any missing episode title listings or incorrect episode numbers, you are welcome to submit the applicable corrections and add missing episodes to the site.  Thanks again for your help with this series and let us know if you have any further questions!
