IMDb now lists The Ox-Bow Incident as having premiered in 1942, when it used to list 1943. Upon research across the internet, there seems to be general consensus that it was released in '43. Turner Classic Movies indicates such, as does the American Film Institute, and Wikipedia (which is admittedly subject to error, but is aligned with IMDb on release years 99.9+% of the time). The film was also nominated for Best Picture at the 16th Academy Awards, held in March 1944 to honor the cinematic year 1943 (though I realize this too is not a perfect science, as that year's winner Casablanca was a '42 release).

Regardless, I've found in IMDb's trivia for the movie that it was screened in St. Louis in December of '42, only to then be shelved for five months while the film's marketing strategy was determined. So is its official release year 1942, or 1943?

Looks like the database is using the USA wide release instead of the Missouri release.
The movie is about an incident that took place in the old west. In 1940 St Louis was "The" big town out west at the time. So they released it there. West coast excluded. Denver was still too small.
Premiering  movies in smaller venues that had tie ins to the them was quite common in that era.
The movie Dodge City was another example. They premiered in Dodge City, Kansas.

Interested in the IMDb reply here as to what is preferred?

IMDb uses the earliest release date for display. That would be 1942 if the St. Louis release is real. The movie would not be eligible for an Oscar until 1944 (which uses movies released in 1943) because the movie has to be released in LA and NYC to be considered which wouldn't happen until 1943.

Hi Phil,

Please note, a title's listed year on IMDb is a reflection on a productions initial release date. Based on the initial screening in St Louis in 1942 we believe the year is correctly listed.
