The porn filter for lists does not work

This is a problem we've been kicking around on the IMDB boards over a number of threads on a couple of forums and we have had some input from staff which has helped us narrow down where the problem is occurring. Unfortunately, all/most of these threads have been deleted (although not, I should add, because of those threads), so I can't direct you to them and there was a tonne of evidence there, but I have (hopefully) boiled it down to its basics in this thread. It can be distilled further though:

The porn filter for lists doesn't work.

That is: the system IMDB use to remove lists with porn films on them, from a film's "related list" section is not working consistently - it includes lists with porn on them and excludes lists that don't have them.

I say "porn" because, even though it says adult films on the search results, it actually filters not by the "Adult" genre but by an unseen (to the normal user) setting that is applied on a case-by-case basis. So Baise Moi isn't listed as porn, despite the fact that it contains unsimulated sex - which seems sensible, if the system actually worked, which it doesn't.

I'll present enough evidence below to give the gist of the problem:

===
Porn films have related lists

The simplest demonstration of this is looking at the lists attached to high profile porn films, like, for example, Deep Throat:

http://www.imdb.com/lists/tt0068468

On that page are some of the lists we've previously flagged up, as some of them contain a large number of porn films, as should be obvious from titles like "AVN's The 101 Greatest Adult Tapes Of All Time":

http://www.imdb.com/lists/tt0068468

Deep Throat is not an isolated case, just the first one I thought of. I've previously provided all sorts of examples but a quick skim through that film's "People who liked this also liked..." section should provide plenty of other examples - the only films flagged as porn on IMDB without lists are the most obscure ones.

--
Lists without porn on them are still flagged

As far as I'm aware, there is supposed to be a process that is supposed to run that checks for porn on a list and if it finds it it flags this up in the lists database entry and its visibility on IMDB is reduced (by excluding it from the "related lists" section). We seen from the above that this isn't working on lists with porn in it, but what about lists without porn?

The typical helpdesk reply to previous contact about our concerns is:

Lists are not featured when they include adult titles. Do you have any examples of lists with no adult titles that are currently not appearing in 'related lists' pages for titles featured in the list?

Thank you.

----
Regards,
Leonard
The IMDb Help Desk

We've presented dozens of lists on previous threads that have had their visibility removed but don't contain porn, which include quite a few of mine:

http://www.imdb.com/list/MUTisOps8S0/
http://www.imdb.com/list/IRI4DX5uI2o/
http://www.imdb.com/list/QUzo9z00B8E/
http://www.imdb.com/list/K7Ze5wOM6Uw/[
http://www.imdb.com/list/2O2mC476sGQ/
http://www.imdb.com/list/aGPRbCPAYbc/

All of them have had porn films on them (although some aren't porn - see below) which were removed once I realised they'd lost their visibility, but this hasn't removed the flag that they contain porn. So the lists are still excluded.

I've only give examples of mine, but people have provided other examples from their lists and I have found a couple of others (but I don't know their history and, also those examples were lost when the threads were deleted). The above is just a selection

--
Non-porn films are flagged as porn

There are also films that aren't porn that appear to be flagged as porn, which make it easy to accidentally add one to a list (if you have any doubts, just read the reviews):

Anatomia Extinction (I have been leaving this to watch but can give it a view now to check):
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0153161/

Lunch Meat (1987) - not even listed as an Adult film:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093452/

And seems to have been confused with the porn film Lunch Meat (2000), which is also, rightly, flagged as being porn:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0304360/

It is the 1987 film which is reducing the visibility of this list of mine:
http://www.imdb.com/list/MUTisOps8S0/

--
Other problems

If you take a list with reduced visibility and save it off as a new list, then this list is now visible.

It also seems that if you add porn to a private list and then make it public, then that list is visible (I assume this is how the lists of porn remain visible). This and the previous point suggest I could game the system if I wanted to, but I'd rather get this resolved so the system you have in place actually work.

I understand the principle you are trying to put in place (to stop kids from accidentally clicking through to a porn film) but they can still get there through the search results (enabling "adult" films) or through filmographies of actors who crossover, like Ron Jeremy:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000465/

===
Solutions

Some possibly better solutions:

* Check the list for porn when it is saved and adjust the visibility accordingly - this seems to be the way it is working to reduce visibility (as mentioned above, I've seen the list's visibility get reduced within 15 minutes, which suggests this is the way it works) but, if so, it is clearly not working consistently (or all lists with porn films on them wouldn't be visible) and isn't checking if a flagged list now contains no porn. However, this doesn't address the problems of being able to browse through to porn from filmographies.

* Filter lists and filmographies to hide the porn film entries, in the same way the search system does and flag this up. This would at least stop children from accidentally stumbling across porn, although flagging it up in the search as being "adult titles/names" might give people the wrong impression that it filters out all films in the adult genre (as I thought until an admin corrected me) and would automatically turn it off (as I did initially). It'd be better to call it what it is, to avoid confusion.

* Along similar lines, you can filter out the lists with porn on them if people haven't enabled porn films in their search results and add them to the related lists page if people have opted in. After all, if they are looking for porn films, they will be interested in lists with porn on them. It is similar to the previous point, but is probably quicker and easier to implement, but it still doesn't address the problem of being able to browse through from filmographies. However, I suspect that might require a larger discussion about filtering out porn and then a while to implement all the changes, so at the worst this could be a stop-gap measure until then.

======
Hope that helps - I have more but that should give a decent outline to the problem. If you want me to clarify anything or I've messed up somewhere. I have more information for all the above points but throwing in too much might make it (more?) difficult to digest. Brevity is king, after all.

Over on the Help forum:
http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000041/n...

Someone flagged up another list which has lost its visibility:
http://www.imdb.com/list/AQ-2ne-hHXs/

A quick check shows that the offending film is this one:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090944/

The problem is that it isn't a porn film and isn't even flagged up with the "Adult" genre, so is a landmine just waiting to take off some unsuspecting listers legs and, at the time of writing, there doesn't seem a way back from this.

You know what, IMDb sucks... some time ago they allow us to add 'adult' people or film & then their system or what, banned it. Then they (Help Desk) run away from responsibility by making this thread site. They only choose problems they like or they feel easy to fix. Haha...

This should be easy to fix though and, as it stands, the system they have in place to stop people stumbling on porn just doesn't work. So they need to do something.

This problem seems to also extend to name lists:
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topi...
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topi...

However, it is even trickier to work out what the offending list item is. I had heard someone mention it might happen with porn-only actors (those without any non-porn credits) but we cant work out what is wrong with the first list and on the second one the problematic actor has mainstream credits but the majority of them are porn, so perhaps it works on a percentage basis. However, the search test which works for films doesn't show he is flagged up as problematic, but a) I don't know if the search excludes actors flagged for porn work and b) I can't think of the name of a porn actor who only has porn credits so I can properly test this (but I will do some digging into filth to see what I can find).

So while the same fix for film lists should help these blacklisted actor lists, it will only do so if people can find out what is causing the problem and it seems much more opaque on the actor front.

The list referred to in the second link briefly disappeared and when it came back it was whitelisted. Although there is an actor with a lot of porn credits on there, it might be that the controversial nature of the list had attracted complaints, which might have led to a temporary loss of visibility while it was looked into (although I assume it was done using the same system as the blacklisting of these other lists).

List prominence is governed by a number of different factors, and we deliberately don't disclose exact details to prevent abuse. Before addressing the main issue here, I just want to clarify one point: there's no guarantee that a list will always show up on the page for items (names/titles) featured within the list, either on the main name/title page or under 'related' list. We do try to feature lists on related pages, but the selection may be suppressed or overridden by a number of other considerations (technical or editorial).

I'm not trying to be obtuse or secretive, I just want to correctly set expectations and dispel the notion that every list will always automatically appear on all names/titles if certain visible criteria are set, and that if/when this does not happen it's because of a bug.

I also want to clarify the distinction between being visible/available and being featured. Unless a list is actually deleted for some reason (by the author or by us), it will always be visible. The presence of adult-oriented titles within a list doesn't render a list invisible or unavailable -- it simply limits how and where the list is featured on the site. But you can still access the list by going directly to its page/URL, and the list will still be included in the list of lists created by its author. For example, as far as I can see all of your lists, regardless of their content/topic, are still featured on this page:

http://www.imdb.com/user/ur5268055/lists

Taking all the above caveats into consideration, under normal conditions most lists should eventually be featured in the 'related lists' section of a page. The presence of adult titles within the list is certainly one of the conditions that may disqualify a list from gaining this level of prominence for obvious reasons so if this is detected incorrectly, we want to fix it.
And by "detected incorrectly", I mean that a list was tagged as containing objectionable titles even when no such titles are included or after they have been removed (to simplify things, for now let's not address the matter of whether some titles are incorrectly tagged as such -- I'm sure that there are several examples of that).

We are running some tests, to see if we can reproduce the problem, and I will let you know what we were able to find.

Thanks for looking into this, and yes, there are a number of related issues, but the core is visibility of lists on a related list page. Everything else is fine-tuning.

Luckily, as I know from experience, it should be easy enough to replicate:

* Add a porn title to a public list that is currently not blacklisted (it is difficult to come up with exact terms to describe it) and it seems to disappear from the related lists pages pretty quickly (or I got "lucky" the one time I saw this happen - it was gone in under half an hour).
* Removing the offending offensive film does not reverse the blacklisting.

Happy hunting.

I am having a similar problem with an image list of mine" 444 Sexy Pictures of Beautiful Mainstream Actresses."

http://www.imdb.com/list/LOy8c7nJL2I/...

This list has over 1 million views in about 5 months, and have had 7000 plus views per 3 days at a minimum since the list was published. Then, all of sudden, the views dropped from 20,000 views per 3 days to 2000 views. This happened about two weeks ago. Since then, my views have continued to shrink to 700 views per day.

The list does show up on the related list of an actress that appears in my list, but, often the list is buried below many other lists, other lists that have not been updated and have much less views than my list.

Is my list being blacklisted for having "porn" images? I freaked out when the views dropped so dramatically, and I read this thread. So, I deleted some pictures which I think may be considered "porn," even though all my pictures are from either an actresses' event picture or movie still from the IMDB database. And, as my title states, my list has NEVER included any pictures of porn actresses, nude or non-nude.

I've poured a lot of energy and creativity into making and re-making this list. If some pictures are offensive, PLEASE LET ME KNOW, and I will take them off. The most frustrating thing about all of this is I have no clue what the standards of appropriateness are, and have had to guess, to no avail.

Your list is appearing on the actresses related lists page, so hasn't been blacklisted. So no need to worry there, or remove anything (there is no way back from blacklisting anyway).

I can't explain why your list was getting such strong traffic or why it has tailed off - it might have been liked to from a popular blog or social media site.

Thanks for the response. I think the problem is that the list rarely appears very high on the related list for a popular actress. I have other lists that are ranked much higher but have never been as popular or anywhere close to 1 million views. This may be a different problem from blacklisting, perhaps I should start a new thread on it.

I think the problem is that the popular actresses appear on a lot of lists, so any one will get buried pretty quickly. It may be that new lists attract more attention, but new ones come along and push it from the top slot.

You could try a more focused list or one with an eye-catching/unique title.

Must say that i ́m really pissed on that new filter. I use imdb too to follow votes lists for individual years and there are now all adult movies gone. But what is considered as adult film is sometimes very questionable. F.e. in 2007 I found excluded movies like Import/Export (austrian festival director Seidl) or El bufalo de la noche (mexican movie with diego luna). Sorry but I see this as censorship and if there will be such an exclusion in lists which I followed f.e. like this (http://www.imdb.com/search/title?sort...) then I don ́t have interest follow such incomplete lists. Try to consider to give a choice to user what he wants to see in the lists too. Imdb is maybe the biggest movie site but not the only one. So pls let me know if you do something with this issue.

Just as an update to my investigations into how this system works.

I just made another list live, which has no porn in it (one Adult genre film that is not flagged as porn) and yet is blacklisted:
http://www.imdb.com/list/Zu0aA0_BPKI/

It did have a number of porn films in but they were all removed before the list went live, but this doesn't seem to have helped. So this rather shoots down my one explanation for how some films manage to have porn on them without being blacklisted - you can add them to a private list without triggering this process, even if you then make it public. So I have no explanation for this - it might be completely random or the additions to the lists pre-date the implementation of the porn filter. Now there is a weird problem with the list (I'm going to have to assemble the evidence and start a new thread for that), so it could be something to do with the underlying problems of that list, although I have a second list that seems to have the same problem and that is visible, s I doubt it.

Worth also flagging up the fact that my list of zombie porn is, correctly, also blacklisted (it too has had no films added to it when the list was public):

Rather than fixing this, you could replace it with a NSFW warning that would also cover the gaps in the current system and be extend to extreme violence and other inappropriate content:

Another thing that makes no sense is how some titles will be blacklisted as "adult", but "adult" won't show up in the genres. I have submitted a film (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2787138/) in which I marked "adult" as one of the genres in my submission. Sure enough, it's blacklisted... yet "adult" is not listed as one of the genres and, when I try to add it, it never shows up. The same goes for other titles (like http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375931/), which are blacklisted as "adult", yet won't allow me to add "adult" to the genres. Is there any kind of rhyme or reason to this whatsoever? Why does IMDb even have an "adult" filter to begin with? It's not like the pages actually have pornographic images/videos in them. In fact, I can name plenty of non-pornographic titles with FAR more offensive titles and/or cover art, none of which are blacklisted at all.

Speaking of things that aren't blacklisted, lists that might actually cause offense - perhaps even legal troubles - pretty much never are. How many lists have there been of "celebrities in the closet" and so forth? Lists like that could actually be grounds for a lawsuit, yet they're completely unfiltered while others get blacklisted for adding a few so-called "adult" films to perfectly legitimate lists, which absolutely nobody would ever complain about. If you can't add these titles to lists, why even have them on the site in the first place?

Indeed, there are a whole suite of related issues (I also give examples above) and I suspect we'll have to address them separately once the core problem is addressed. With that in mind, what kind of progress has there been in the 2 months since this was flagged up with the relevant team?

The question is - is Inside Deep Throat pornographic? It is clearly flagged as porn, but I could see a documentary on a porn film might not be pornographic itself, despite the topic. Then again this is assigned on a case-by-case basis, but (as I flag up above) they can be wrong.

Ahhhhhh you made me think this was all fixed.

I'm not sure what the problem is though - isn't the search business to do with the porn search filter (I just checked and porn shows up just fine with it toggled off) and I don't believe there is a way to filter a list for porn (I have to use the search porn filter to work out what is what).

Or have I misunderstood?

In other porny list news: oddly my zombie porn list (mentioned above) completely disappeared from Google and I was worried IMDB had deleted it (for some reason) but it was still there. Seems to be a Google issue and it is now slowly climbing back up the rankings (I do wonder if it disappeared briefly and Google delisted it). It was my second most popular lists (after, coincidentally, torture porn and ahead of the third placed British zombie films).

So, is there any way that we can just request for our lists to be un-blacklisted by hand until this issue is resolved? I recently came across a list called "HELL" which includes dead people that the list creator believes are in hell, including - you guessed it - Trayvon Martin. These blatantly offensive and troll-ish lists are not filtered, yet my completely innocent ones are?

I have had this problem too. I added a title that wasn't even marked as adult to a list of mine and now the list has disappeared. It just doesn't make sense. I've seen actual nudity on some cover images for movies that aren't adult but I've never seen anything worth filtering on a page for an adult film. I think this whole filter thing is just a terrible mess that needs to be done away with.

That's actually one of the titles that I tried to add the "adult" genre label to, but it never showed up. The other one was the hentai Bondage Game. Love is the Number of Keys shows up when searched for with the adult filter on (although I seem to recall that it didn't used to), whereas Bondage Game does not.

I removed the "adult" label from No Skin Off My Ass (1993) since it is not an adult film, but my black and white films made after the 1960's list is still blacklisted nonetheless.

I had previously added Thundercrack! (1975) to the list back when you had to import "adult" films from your ratings to add them to lists. That did not blacklist it.

The way we are leaning right now is that this will probably be addressed by adding a warning (displayed during list creation or right before saving/publising) which will let the user know when the list contains titles that are likely to affect its visibility.

This will allow the user to choose whether he wants to continue (and publish a list which may not be featured in 'related lists' etc.) or exclude those titles from the list.

We are still working on this so it will take a bit longer for these changes to be implemented, but I just wanted to give a quick update to let you know that we haven't forgotten about this issue.

I think the way to fix that for an already published list would be to copy the list content to a new list (minus any titles that would trigger the exclusion).

The problem is: I have my lists heavily interlinked and a number get great Google results (partly because of the interlinking I suspect). I'd rather not have to redo everything if possible. Plus some of my lists are close to 2k, which makes copying them across to other lists.

It also doesn't solve the problem of other lists with porn in them appearing in the related lists.

The best solution would be: when you are ready to implement the new system, run a one-time-only script to check through lists for porn. Clearly you'd also need to fix the problem with the films that are flagged as porn, which aren't as that is pretty confusing too and might make it difficult for people to find the film causing them problems (as I'm sure at least one isn't in the Adult genre).

But what about the lists that have already been blacklisted and cannot be un-blacklisted? Furthermore, why is such a filter even necessary in the first place? There are many films with posters on IMDb that depict graphic gore and/or nudity - and none of them are "adult" films. How is seeing an "adult" title on a list somehow more offensive than seeing images like these?

Shall I continue? There are countless more examples, of course. None of this content is filtered and none of these films are "adult" films. Yet filtering out lists that have "adult" titles on them is somehow necessary? There just isn't any logic behind this.

But what about the lists that have already been blacklisted and cannot be un-blacklisted?
Although the original list may be blacklisted, it is relatively easy to copy the original list to a second list and then make the original list private for reference. However, I would wait until IMDb correctly implements the filter.

The poster art that you mention, is another issue. They are definitely Not Safe for Work (NSF).

Copying the original list into a new one would not only cause the loss of page views, likes, and comments, but it would also be very inconvenient to go through and pick out every single "adult" film (including ones that aren't labeled as "adult", but are still filtered), especially if the list has over 1,000 titles like one of mine does. What would be the correct implementation of the filter?

Also, what is even the point of having an adult filter in the first place? It would be one thing if the pages for adult films had sexually explicit pictures and/or videos on them, but none of them do and any attempt to submit sexually explicit content to a page would never be approved in the first place. As I demonstrated above, the only pages with graphic content on them are the ones for films that aren't "adult" at all.

Madotsuki_the_Dreamer, I agree the work-around that I suggested has a number of short comings.

Let's hope that the technical staff resolve the problems with the porn filter quickly.

I have this problem too. I had read all comments and problem in this topic.

My problem is about 1 week ago my list http://www.imdb.com/list/CNNnOcpTuE4/ still appeared on related list of films. But now, its ~ disappeared ~

I found a new problem... I think my problem bcause of this.. Some time ago, this film Womb Raider http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387693/ is not filtered by IMDb's search system so it can add into my list. But nowadays after I found my list (which already running 9 months) gone from related lists, I found that movie 'Womb Raider' is filtered by IMDb which (maybe) my list 'blacklisted' on related lists of all film in my list because of that. It's like a trap.... +_+

And I found this problem is not fixed yet. I JUST WANT MY LIST BACK ON "RELATED LISTS". Don't ask me to transfer my movie to a new list, because it will randomized. My list almost in my order. And don't ask me to make a new list and add movie 1 by 1, because it take a long time and very tiring (my list almost have 2000 movies).

If this is a bug, you (IMDb worker) can fix it soon right?? It's not an offensive list, we all who have this problem just want our list not 'blacklisted' from related list, because its feel fun if our list shared to other people on IMDb.

That's interesting - it is always a little tricky working quite how some lists end up blacklisted and others sail through (even ones dedicated to porn), so finding out that this can happen through a retroactive change in settings on a film you have on the list is another angle I don't think I've seen before.

This suggests that the solution proposed above just won't work - flashing up a warning when you add a title to a list is all fine and dandy, but as a list can get blacklisted because a film gets changed to porn, then this won't help.

If you have to have a porn filter, then it has to either by changed when you add or remove a film from a list or they run an occasional (once a week?) process that checks for porn. Not knowing how the system works, I'd have imagined that the simplest (and the one that would use less server resources over time) would be the first one, but it might be they have a few ways of adding titles to a list that don't go through a central function (which would be where you could do a quick check, if a film being added is porn, then you'd flag it up in the porn blacklist column), so you'd need to ensure each way had a porn filter check, and the process is simpler.

I'd have imagined this isn't so.

Sometimes, pages aren't available for a brief time. Try again now and see what happens.

I do not understand how IMDb expects to have current information of the actor profiles.

I too took a long time to correct and update, some of the information is posted some not, some gets put on then taken off, then added, then removed. Do a google search to verify the information if you do not trust us; or is our input not valid to help keep your site current?

"HP Distinguished Technologist Vinay Gupta remarks that whenever people meet him for the first time, they are always surprised at how much younger he is than they expected. It must be that word "distinguished." It implies the possession of great dignity and nobility in appearance or behavior.
