That just reminded me that I should really watch some Oscar-winning silent movies, because I've definitely not seen enough. I am most aware of Wings (1927) and it seems that despite movie is usually only known for being first Academy Award winner, movie holds up really well and has some jaw-dropping cinematography even by modern standards.

Have you considered adding The Artist (2011) to the list?

I was surprised not to see 'Artist' in the advanced search result >> http://www.imdb.com/search/title?title_type=feature&groups=oscar_winner&sound_mixes=silent

I don't think we can consider this as a 'proper' silent movie. There are some scenes in the movie producing sounds.

It was a tribute to silent film or silent era but it itself not a proper silent film.

How come All Quiet in the Western Front and Broadway Melody are listed as silent films? I have seen both, and both have sound and dialogues, Broadway Melody is a musical.

I'm a homer on "Wings" - The flying segments were shot in the Hill Country just north of my hometown of San Antonio, in an area called Camp Stanley. I first saw it at the Institute for Texan Cultures in the 1980s.

It's so clear that a lot of people just clicked on the first choice bc they haven't seen any of the others.

Hi Reece Daniels,

Unfortunately, that happens in many polls in which users are unfamiliar with the choices. IMDb's also has had a problem with robot accounts that vote for the first choice in multiple polls.

In this case, what you observe may be occurring. However, the leader in the poll, Sunrise (1927), is the fifth choice in the poll. The first choice in the poll, 7th Heaven (1927), received the third most votes.

DC,

Although this is a very good poll, it may well get the record for the poll featured on the IMDb Home Page which benefited the least from being on the IMDb Home Page. Your poll currently only has 264 votes.

At least we know this poll is not receiving spam votes.

Dan,

This poll is getting 10-15 votes per hour. The slowest voting rate for a home page poll in recent times.

DC,

On one hand, it's annoying that more people are not voting in this poll. On the other hand, this is a good indication that people are less likely to vote when they are unfamiliar with the subject matter.

THE WAY OF ALL FLESH is a lost film but still got votes. THE DIVINE LADY (1929) won a Oscar for director Frank Lloyd but is not on the list.

Hi Dred,

From Wikipedia,

The Divine Lady is a 1929 American Vitaphone sound film with a synchronized musical score, sound effects, and some synchronized singing, but no spoken dialogue.

It was not a proper 'silent' film.

Then neither was WHITE SHADOWS..... which also has a synchronized soundtrack. Neither has nay dialog. Many MANY silent films had synchronized soundtracks and sound effect..... OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS, SHOW PEOPLE, etc. They are still silent films.
