Dear IMDB: regarding list. I believe that list should be restrict to no more that 50 (i pefer 30) entries. Some people seem to want to recreate IMDB. e.g the 676 most beautiful main stremm...

I can't agree with this, as I have some lengthy list because the topic demands it. The size of a list is displayed, so a user has the choice whether to view it or not.

You don't need to wade through a long list - the film ones allow you filter and sort the page, one of the advantages of the longer list.

Emperor, You're right about is up to the user to view the list or not, I didn't see your lists but I find a little difficult to even remember what was the point of a list too long. I can find some examples where it becomes necessary like Every film I've ever seen or Actors born in USA, But if you make a list selecting tha best of or the most beautiful or anything you want to highlight 30 or 50 is more than enough

Oh indeed, but if you are trying to cover a sub-genre comprehensively then the list can get big. I am working on a zombie film one, for example, which is big and going to get bigger. I also have one on British horror movies since 2002:
www.imdb.com/list/xbY59mdFHUs/

As you can see there the number of films released each year is going up massively (and the same applies to zombie films) so you are going to be adding a hundred or more a year.

How does you filter a list

Look in the righthand column for the "refine list" section which allows you to filter by type (so you can cut out short films, or TV movies) or genre and, perhaps most importantly for big lists, you can limit the year range. So I can produce a long list of zombies films and there is no need to break this down into smaller lists, like "Seventies zombie films", as the user can do that themselves.

You can then bring a lot more features to bear using "view all filters" at the bottom of this area and once you get used to that you can manipulate the URL yourself to get just about anything you could want.

Well, as this was bumped here is the zombie movie list:

http://www.imdb.com/list/Zu0aA0_BPKI/

Neither this, nor the British horror renaissance, is yet over 2k, but it won't be long.

Well:

a) The keyword section is incomplete

b) It really depends on your definition of zombie (which brings back bad memories for the veterans of the 28DL Wars) - I have two more lists for films that sometimes fall under the category of zombies and sometimes not. As this can be very subjective, I've found the keyword... unsatisfactory.

This bump was brought to you courtesy of this thread:

Which flagged up the list 4.8k Stunning Actresses:

excellent suggestion Dan..I must start on the list ASAP :D and lol emperor, yeah this is a bit silly..if anything the limit should be 500 for names and 1000 for titles....with names, the user can create a new list e.g (My 1000 favourite actress - Part 2), no need to dump them all in one list....why a higher number for titles cause titles generally get more likes than names as people come to IMDb to look at movie titles more so than to find some random unknown actor......

I have two lists that are close to 2,000 titles and see no problem with that.

Some people use lists to track the films they watch because they don't want to use ratings - they would quite easily blow through a 1000-title limit.

There are some popular "best film lists" that are over 1000 titles (because one entry on the list translates to multiple entries on the IMDb) - TSPDT, Rosenbaum's 1000 Essential Films, 1000 Films to See Before You Die, etc. People naturally want to track those films on the IMDb.

What is the problem that's being solved for by limiting the number of names/titles on a list?

When IMDb originally implemented lists, lists had a maximum size of 250 items. I suspect that limiting the number of items on a list will lead to a different problem, proliferation of lists of the form "My favorite films (Part 20)".

Indeed. It doesn't solve any problems and will create new ones. The arguments against long lists mainly seem to be that people don't like them - if so, just ignore them.

As sienel says, personal lists are often longer than this - my ratings and watchlist are 2.5-3k. I believe someone has complained because they have reached the list size limit (I seem to recall that is 10k).

As a very public example, Col Needham's ratings list is currently at 8,352 ratings. Col is actively adding to his ratings list.

And there are some with longer ratings than that (I'm sure I've seen at least one that is over 10K).

When lists were first introduced, we did not impose a size restriction; however, managing very long lists created some technical issues so we had to set a maximum size (I believe the current limit is 5,000 items for user-generated lists).

We have no plans at this time to further restrict list size.
