As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the user experience and provide all users worldwide with the same rich selection of features and content, beginning on February 18, visitors to IMDb.de, IMDb.fr, IMDb.it, and IMDb.es will be automatically redirected to the main IMDb.com site, which offers functionality not available on the translated sites such as the ability to:

  • Watch a vast selection of the newest trailers and other compelling video content.
  • Receive personalized movie and TV show recommendations.
  • Create your own Watchlist to keep track of what you’ve watched and what you want to see.

Additionally, we encourage our non-English speaking users to download IMDb’s leading, award-winning iOS and Android apps, which provide local/translated content (including entertainment news, reviews and movie showtimes). To download IMDb’s mobile apps now, free of charge, go to: http://www.imdb.com/apps/

Do you mean to say that all the reviews and summaries I have written in French have vanished in the haze ? Or should I load the imdb.com app mentioned above to find them back ? Couldn't you have warned us before doing that. There was no message on the pages of imdb.fr. I feel betrayed.

Content that was posted to the translated IMDb sites is not lost and will likely reappear on IMDb.com once we have implemented more localization functionality-- see here for more info.

I'm sorry to hear that the change caught you by surprise, but we did post a prominent notice on the homepage of IMDb.fr and the other sites, which was displayed for about two weeks ahead of the transition.

I admit I did not see the notice. But I tend to skip the home page to get directly to the title page on which I work. It would have been good to post this notice on each page (the way Wikipedia does). Will it be possible to go on writing in French or will only the old material be posted ? And when are the texts in foreign lnguages likely to reappera ?
Thanks in advance

Who on earth makes a decision like that should be fired. All the users who provided the community content in their language for those German/French/etc sites now are forced to use a smartphone to view their results, seriously?

When can we expect "more localization functionality" on imdb.com you mentioned? Is this about days/weeks/months?

I totally agree with you. Now I am unable to access the German content. This really is a huge disappointment.

It is more than disappointment, it leaves me totally puzzled, and lost at finding any rational explanation for the move. In a world where all the major sites (including Amazon...) are investing heavily on localization, IMDb is the only one to step back.
Moreover, and personally, I do not own any iOS or Android device, and who would enjoy browsing the whole of IMDb information on small portable screens when a PC or a Mac screen does it much better?

On top of it, you are barring access to those whose English level will prevent them from looking beyond simple data, and enriching the content which will be of interest for their region.

This decision was a tough one, and the absence of communication somewhat brutal: as Guy Bellinger above, I never visit(ed) the home page (it looks like hundreds of other showbiz dedicated ones), but goes directly to the useful one.

This has been a most unfortunate decision in the present Internet World.

Well said! I totally agree with you. I like your Amazon anology as I too use both amazon.com and amazon.de and Amazon's iPad and Android apps, which let you switch back and forth between their various country sites. It is most unfortunate that the people at IMDB have taken this step backwards like you said. It was unnecessary and extremely inconvenient. We can only hope that the IMDB folks will listen to reason and correct this huge probem.

puzzled is not the right word for it. ANGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY DID IMDB DO THIS!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!! just one more way in which the site has taken another SWIPE at its faithful viewers. i gotta say, i may just quit the site altogether. this is TOTALLY unacceptable. TOTALLY unwarranted. i suspect it has something to do with ads revenues. who knows. so i have to go buy a TABLET now if i want to access the foreign language pages? that is unbelievable. IT ALL WENT DOWN HILL WHEN AMAZON TOOK OVER. it has steadily declined since then. one thing after another, has been taken away from (the, again, i repeat) FAITHFUL users. i feel so betrayed. so so so betrayed. and there is nothing i can do about it, except to maybe just stop using imdb. you guys are total jerks for doing this to the foreign users. JERKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
